ok, ok, i know this has been asked over, and over and over and over again! but my head is spinning, i am looking to get a dual set up for my 2006 FX4 crew stepside, i have found a couple of kits on ebay for about $250, not stainless i do not have the money! one is a magnaflow and the other is a flowmaster. i drive this truck everyday for about a 45 minute commute on highways each way and am scared of getting the drone! but i want an aggressive sounding muffler to make my V8 sound like a V8! a little in cab noise is ok as i usually have the radio on when i drive. i have been reading muffler threads for the past 2 days and still cannot make up my mind, so i thought i would turn to the guru's on this forum for advice! i want to spend about $300 on the setup so any mufflers that a shop can do for about that are also in consideration, plus the fact i want a 45 turn down at each corner if i get a shop to do it, i know i am limited with out the back or wheel exits on pre made kits, but i can live with that if the price is right. i am really at a loss and think i am on the verge of a breakdown, i am going to be hearing muffler sound clips in my dreams tonight i think!
thank you in advance for any help!
Rik
I have flowmasters on my 5.4 V8. I love the sound. I do here it slightly when I don't have any music on... but i like it. I don't notice it at all when I'm playing music. I'd say its perfect for my taste.

which series flowmaster do you have? i was quoted $200 for the 40 series with duel out. i have heard these drone though? where do your tail pipes exit? i have heard that this can make a difference too?

If you are not set on Flowermaster or MagnaFlow take a peek in this thread and you can hear how my 2006 XLT scab 5.4L on a WickedFlowMAX sounds like. Muffler was under $70 out the door and that much to have a guy tack it up after cutting the water heater masquerading as my muffler was cut off.
ya, the exit definitely makes a difference. If you exit at the wheels on a supercrew, you WILL have drone. The muffler is directly beneath the cab of the truck. You need to keep the muffler as close to the stock location as possible, and exit out the back. either straight, or angle to the corners, NO TURNDOWNS, this will send the sound reflecting back at your truck from the road surface, causiing reverberations and sometimes buzzing in the cab.
Flowmaster sounds really nice...but they drone like a big dog...and are godawfully loud.
I've run Magnaflow on 3 different vehicles so far and love them. Considering that you say you want noise, but no drone I think that is your best bet.
BTW, pick up a Maggie muffler online for under $100 shipped. Then your local shop should be able to weld it up for you. I can easily see it being <$250 all said.
You wanting dual exhaust? Magnaflow has a single pipe setup that is almost as loud as a dual pipes...and it will really lower the price
I agree with the O.P . the exhaust threads around here seem endless. Ive listened to tons of sound clips and read all the post I can find, and im still undecided. Everyone seems contradict each other. I like the sound of the factory exhaust, but would like to wake it up just a bit. I had a straight piped turbo diesel (still have it, its for sale) before this truck, im done with loud for a while. I do not like the exhaust systems that pop or crackle when you rev and let off the throttle. They remind me of a v6 or 4 banger with a glasspack. Just would like a deep aggressive sounding note at WOT and keep it quiet while on the highway.
you only hear it when you are in the throttle. Hell, even with my Supercharged 5.4 and the Maggie kit #16614 installed, it wasn't overly loud. You knew it was a V-8, but the noise is outstanding.
cruising at 30 mph or 75 mph, you can overpower it with the radio at 2 bars. Stomp the throttle though and you can hear that puppy roar.

im leaning towards the magna flow, but the exhaust clips ive listend to had that pop/crackle sound to them. the sound clip on their web sit even sounds almost like a backfire when they let off at the end of the run. other than the pops it sounds great.
