GlassPacks

Hi i just bought a Nice 91 F150 4X4 Lariat with a 351 v8 and i have a question.

I am just too stupid when it comes to cars and trucks i do like working on engines but when it comes to drive train and other things i just cant get it right.

I have been driving this truck for only 3 days and i have some questions about Mufflers and pipes,Like i said i dont know much and i was wondering what GlassPack's are do they replace the muffler or are they added to the muffler to make the truck sound better?

If they dont replace the muffler is it ok to pull out the muffler, add a glasspack and be on my way,If not what would be the best setup considering that im starting with the factory setup and dont mind how loud my truck is as long as it dosnt give the cop's another reason to pull me over.

And what are Cat's ?

Thanks

Catalytic convertors chemically react with your exhaust to make emisions more friendly to the environment.

Easiest way I could say to find or see what they are look under you truck and you should follow the exhast pipe and you will see two or three large cylinders or oval shaped pieces. You may have two cats and one muffler or one cat and on muffler either way it will become more apparant when you look under your truck.

A glasspack is a muffler and yes you can replace your existing muffler with the glasspack no doubt. Do you have emisions testing? If so, then check with them as to what is required as far as catalytic convertor. If not, then go somewhere and have a new dual exhaust put on with glasspacks and recommend that the cat disappears. If it is a high mile vehicle it could have clogged cat's so you could increase performance by replacing or deleting it, as well as the muffler. Good luck with your truck

I personally don’t care for glass packs, why don’t you stick a flowmaster under there or get a duel catback setup.

Glass packs are mufflers and can replace the stock muffler, BUT, you may not pass emissions and or noise laws, so check first.

Many glass packs do not improve performance, but they usually are louder. Choose a good name brand glass pack and check to see if the flow rating is as good or better than stock. Usually longer glasspacks will flow better and be quiter than short glass packs. Cheap glasspacks can clog up or have the glass stuffing blown out so buy good ones.

I don't recommend glass packs now, but when I was young I liked the kind of burbley sound of long glasspacks. The short ones are much louder and can be crackly sounding. If you want good performance and a quiet ride get one of the good free flow steel mufflers like Borla and Freeflo? and other name brands.

Good Luck,

Jim Henderson

Well i didnt know that when people said cat that it was just short for Catalytic convertors and i have read up on Catalytic convertors along time ago (or it seems) and i just thought that cat's were something elce.

I seem to have 2 cat's,I know that i have one because i can see it clearly but i cant tell if the other thing i see is one or not it is in the same place where the 2 pipes convert to 1 pipe and its on the right and its right under the engine.

now im guessing i can just pop the Cat off and the muffler then just put 1 glasspack in place,Fit everything together and then ill be done and i wont lose much considering that Glasspacks cost only around 20.00 if i dont like the way it sounds.

Thanks

Hey, I have a 93 F-150 that I have tried many different combos with the exhaust. Unless you live in California you CAN remove your muffler and pass emissions with no problem (i did). The way I would set it up, and the way i have it noe is:
Shorty headers off the block, do not connect the pipes! , hi-flow cat (catalytic converter) on each side, bring the tailpipe in front of the rear wheels. About 200 bucks. It sounds good, deep, loud, it turns heads, and it is very intimidating. hopw this helps.

yes on the 90's fords, they put a pre-cat which is there to help keep unburned fuel from getting out and then the actual cat which holds everything else back.

just be careful b/c messing with the cats is illegal in all states.
You really are not supposed to move them at all. Good luck.
