Ive got a F-5 position on an 02 7.3L Excursion. When i tow in 40 or 60hp tow mode I occasionally get a check engine light signal. When this happens I usually go back to stock mode and within a few days the light goes off... does this happen to anyone else and if so what do you do about it?
You're more than likely setting one of, if not all three, codes related to overboost, ICP, or EBPV. All three are common when you run custom tuning on your rig.
Thanks Adam, feel like I trampled the heck out of this thread, its the burnout that did it, my oppoligies Chris.

If you can, locate someone who has a reliable code scanner that will read codes on a PSD just to make sure.
I'm almost positive, by the way you're describing when it happens, that you're experiencing one, two, or all three of the most common codes to pop up on a custom tuned truck, those being:
P0238 – MAP sensor overboost
P0478 - exhaust backpressure high
P1211 - ICP pressure above/below desired level
P0238 (Overboost) can be fixed by fooling the MAP sensor into seeing lower than 25psi to prevent the computer from setting the code. Dennis at ITP Diesel has an Overboost Annihilator that a lot of us run to accomplish this. Some have made their own boost line regulator.
P0478 (EBPV too high) can be fixed by gutting your EBPV, or sometimes cleaning the small steel tube leading from the sensor to the passenger side exhaust manifold will help keep this code from setting.
P1211 (ICP code) just means your injectors aren't firing as much fuel as they potentially can, under heavy demands (WOT, heavy towing with a heavy foot etc) because they aren't being supplied with enough oil from the high pressure oil system. You can live with it like a lot of us do, get a "codes" tune from Jody, or upgrade your HPOP.
Jody's codes tune will keep all three from setting your SES light.
Mine will break loose my 35 inch Nittos, but they are very low on tread right now. If I remember correctly, it wouldn't break them loose when they were new.
Thanks for the detail associated with these codes. When it first happened, I took it to the Ford dealership, and they said that it was an emissions code, but there were no problems to address. The second time it happened, the code had already disappeared so they said they couldn't address anything either. From then on, I just let the light go out after a day or so.
I will certainly try these solutions when I get a chance. Thanks again for your help.
i love my DpTuner, and can roll the coal in any tune, 40tow, 80E and 120. But my tnes are almost 4 years old, and im getting ready to throw a bunch of new parts at my truck, and also going to get a new F6, and then live tuned in April. Should be a lot of fun to drive when done. My goal is 480hp
I agree, DP Tuner is the way to go. I've got a heavy excursion and I've not pushed it as hard as it will go, so I've not smoked any tires. But, the performance gains are amazing. It's like night and day difference!

You're welcome.
I've had Jody's tunes on my Excursion for right around three years now, way before he created the "No Codes" tune, so I still set the EBPV and ICP codes every-so-often.
I have ITP's OBA on both of my rigs so the P0238 code never sets.
When I had my F250 live-tuned, Jody created "No Codes" tunes for me so I never have a problem setting any of those pesky codes in my truck.
I had always read that certain codes could be set off by adding tuners, but I just wanted to make sure that I wasn't alone in my situation with the DP Tuner (since I like it so much), or that I wasn't doing damage to my engine. I've never really pushed my diesel to the max, so I don't think I would be overusing it. I'm conservative since I want to keep my excursion forever.
