engine dies???

I just purchased a 1985 crew cab one ton truck with a 460 in it. the truck only has 106000 miles on it. it seems like about every other time i try to start it, it starts fine, then dies in about the time it would take to suck all the fuel from the fuel bowl, when it dies you dont here the pump running in the tank (duh). but if you flip the selector switch in the cab back and forth a few times you can hear the pump kick back on and it runs great??? so is the problem in my dash switch or is it in the selector valve on the frame rail??? or am i missing something else in the wire mess?? thanks....Justin

I would check the relay that sends power to the fuel pump. The dash switch and selector valve shouldn't go "bad" if they were working when you turned the truck off. On the other hand, the relay re-sets itself every time you start your truck. If it is sticking, your toggling the fuel selector switch might jog it loose, but it should probably be replaced before it fails entirely.

where would i find this relay??? I assume its by the firewall on the drivers side front fender? there is two there ones a four wire ones a five....i think?
