I bought a 1991 F250 7.3 diesel truck a couple of months ago with 147,000 miles. I quickly learned that it has the annoying strainer come off the pick-up tube in the rear tank, which is a project for another day.
My issue that has recently come to my attention over the weekend is that I've noticed I'm drawing fuel from both tanks at the same time, at least it is when the selector switch is set for the front tank. This caused the rear tank to draw down below 1/8th and with the strainer gone the fuel pump started sucking air, causing surging then dying on the side of the road. When I put some fuel in the rear tank it fired right back up after bleeding the system and ran fine. The selector switch seems to switch tanks as it should according to the gauge, and I haven't tried to run on the rear tank yet to see if it also draws from the front at the same time. My question is should I assume the selector valve is bad internally or is there by chance something else I should check before condemning the selector valve. Thanks for any ideas or suggestions.
The valve could be sticking part way through. You may be able to backflush it and break free whatever is causing it to stick. Or you may need to replace the selector valve.
