I've got a '97 Expl XLT. It still has the plastic decals on the paint. How can I peal those off without taking the paint with them?? I want to give my truck the "shaved" look...no decals at all. Any help is good help!!
I'm not sure how they are attaced, but you maybe be able to use a heatgun/blow dryer. But if they are like my '65, I doubt it is, but if it is, it has screws on the inside.
I had a camaro that had the 3 colored stripes along the whole bottom of the car and I had repair work done and the would not replace them on one side so I took them off the other side with a rubber disc on a bit that went into my drill, I bought it through a sears auto repair catalog, the rubber on it was like the rubber block you use to clean you belt sander with, this disc I bought was just for taking of decals and it worked great, it took a while to do but the only thing that came off was the decal.
A friend who has done this a couple times said a heat gun works best. He told me I could borrow his. Well after a couple of months of waiting for him to find it I thought I just go buy one.
However on the weekend I was going to do it I washed the truck so I would have a clean work surface. And then just to see I picked at one corner with my finger nail. A very small edge lifted up. Hardly anything at all. I figured little bits and pieces would come off and I didn't want the sticker all messed up so I pushed it back down and it looked like new. Then I thought "what the heck, I'm taking these off anyway". Twenty minutes later I had the "OFF ROAD 4X4" stickers off both sides. The second side came off intact.
I found by just picking at it to lift it up enough to get a grip Ithen pull it off. If it starts tearing just stop pulling and pick a little more. Initially it was a real pain because so little progress was made but as soon as I got enough to grab a hold of the sticker came of very easily. I did this on a mildly warm spring day(about 72 degrees).
If the stickers have been there any lenght of time you'll see how much your paint has faded.
