Has anyone ever removed their decals from the bed sides?....can it be done without messing up the paint?
I'm asking because I have a red FX4 and want to remove the factory decals and replace with the 4x4 offroad decals. The factory decals are red and it just doesn't look that good to me on a red truck.
Get really close with a pressure washer. I had little black dots stuck on the side of my truck from oak tree sap i guess, and i was using a 3400psi pressure washer at 2" to remove them, got too close to that sticker and blasted the corner of the 4 off. I finished off that one and liked it so i went around and did it to the other side, monday evening. Funny thing is, i WANT the red FX4 decal, and i HAD the 4x4 off road sticker, but it's in pieces in my driveway.
YES, you will need an Eraser tool. It is basically a low rom Die Grinder with a giant eraser attached to it. It is available at any Paint and Body shop supply store. I bought mine from Sherwin Williams for 30 bucks. It is designed for exactly that removing decals without damaging your paint. It will require an Air Compressor.
On the majority of decals a little bit of heat from a heat gun to be able to lift a corner with your finger and peel it off, and then some 3M adhesive remover to remove the adhesive. Done this with lots of decals and lettering over the years.
I can't remember on my 4x4 decal....might have even been able to peel it without the heat.

I remove everything like this as well, works great.
I vote for a heat gun. Been using one for this for the last few years. just take your time, scratch at the corner with a finger nail and it will start to lift off. I removed the blue from my grill and tailgate ford logos so I have all chrome badges now. Looks great.
Mine peeled right off and left very little glue behind. Removed the remainder of the glue with 3M adhesive remover. Took about 10 minutes to do both sides.
I swapped out my standard 4x4 decals for fx4 decals. I used a hair dryer and it worked great. It didn't leave too much of the adhesive behind so my new decals went back on perfectly after I removed what little adhesive was left on the paint.
