Windshield washer pump - is there a screen?

2001 5.4L F-150 - the washer fluid comes out a bit too weak now, doesn't hit the upper part of the windshield like it used to. The wiper fluid tank doesn't have a screen on top like the old days, and I'm wondering if I've got something caught in the pump intake. How do you pull off the pump to check the intake? I see no bolts or other fasteners - is it a compression fit (like a hose barb)? Is there a screen on the pump intake?

Open the hood and look at the bottom of the washer fluid resevoir.
At the bottom front is a black cylindrical piece with a wire connector at the top and hose at the bottom.
Remove the wire connector.
Firmly grasp the top and bottom of the cylinder and "wiggle" out.
Be prepared for whatever fluid inside to spill. No worries, it's cheap and not harmful.

Now when you look at the actual motor itself there is a fine mesh screen that filters out particles. Unfortunately quite a few of the washer fluid out there becomes filmy, whether it's used independently or mixed with other fluids.

Take a low pressure garden hose and spray the film off. you may also use very low pressure to see if you can push anything in the lines out too.

There is a rubber grommet to keep it from leaking, make sure this is still there when you install the pump motor, it may stay in the reservoir or stick to the unit itself.

Thanks, Mawk. Maybe filling the tank with hot water and running it for awhile would clean off those deposits, eh?

That or it'll be creating floaties that will clog up the mesh.

Also verify that there's not mineral deposit in the nozzle holes itself.

FIXED

The pump comes out easy enough, more of a push down to unsnap the pump housing from the reservoir. The screen was at the entrance to the pump's gasket, and stays in the reservoir. I really can't see how you can get at it, but it was clean anyway. I blew the pump out with air, but didn't see any junk in it. Put it all back together and filled it up with some hot hot water. It still sprayed weak on the driver's side, but seemed stronger on the passenger side. Gotta be a clogged nozzle eh? I rooted around the nozzle with a couple of brushes, and after that it was much better. Really had to stuff a bunch of toothbrush bristles into the hole before it sprayed with any gusto.

At least I know now how to swap out a wiper fluid pump if need be.

windshield washer pump - 2002 f150 5.4 V8

I have a very similiar problem where the washer fluid barely comes out of the nozzels. My Ford is a 2002 F150 5.4 V8. Is my pump configuration the same as the 2001 F150 you described in this thread?

Thanks
James Michael
