Master Cylinder Change

If I change out the Master Cylinder because of a leak, do I have to perform any special bleeding process? Does the ABS come into play while bleeding or can I just bleed every caliper the normal way?

Thanks in advance,
Robert

read my post here: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/8...-at-least.html.

An MC change will almost guarantee you have to do an ABS bleed..

Bob,
Thank you for the info. I had no idea that a scan tool is needed to open up the ABS valves. If I am going to invest money then what kind and/or model scan tool do you recommend?

I don't have one that will do it. I have a simple OBDII code reader. I don't know what my mechanic Rich uses. Anyone else?

I found a couple of code readers/scanners on amazon.com both with ABS capability.
They are Equus Innova 3150 and the 3160 models. Does anyone know if these will allow me to properly bleed my brakes through the ABS module?

I looked at those and the 3150 for $169 seems like a pretty good deal. It says they will do the ABS codes, so they should be able to open the valves for bleeding. Anyone have one of these?

Equus 3160

Hate to bring up an old thread but I'm also interested in knowing if the 3160 will allow me to bleed the abs system properly in my '01 X. The way I understand it is that with bi-directional functionality, it should work.

The 3150/3160 should do it fine. Talked to my mechanic and he said any code scanner that tests ABS functionality/diagnoses ABS codes will do it, as part of the testing is to open the solenoids individually and that allows bleeding....

Thanks for the reply! Sort of off topic but is the 3150/3160 a good unit? I've looked into these before but it seems that there can be thousands spent and then down to $100-200. I've always been a firm believer in "you get what you pay for" but I can't force myself into spending $1000 on a unit.

The reviews on them are pretty good. I am going to buy a 3160 in the very near future. Probably this winter.....

Just to clarify something - a scanner which can read the ABS codes doesn't mean it is bi-directional. You have to have an actual diagnostics scan tool which is significantly more than just a code reader. I have the 3150 and it will read ABS codes as well as some of the enhanced DTC's but it does not perform testing or opening of the ABS system.

The DIY method a lot of people use is to bleed normally - then take the truck out for a short drive and engage the ABS several times and then repeat the bleeding process. I can't verify this works - but it's worth a try.

Doesn't the 3160 add the bidirectional functionality and also shouldn't that enable it to pulse the abs? I'm asking because I'm uncertain and totally unfamiliar with code readers in general. Thanks for all the help guys.

As far as i know the 3160 only adds the ability to be able to view and record live data from the OBD2 port. If you contact Equus and the 3160 can do it post back here - I'd love to know as I'll buy the 3160 as well!

Here's a comparison chart I used when purchasing the 3150:
Equus Products, INC.

I am almost 100% positive that Equus does NOT have a scan tool that will preform Output State Control (this is the functions that are needed to send messages TO the vehicles ECU's to preform tests). Only the VERY HIGH END tools (SPX/OTC, Snap On) or the Dealer tool will do this. I have an OTC Genisys and it will command functional tests for the modules on board the vehicle.
