I'll bet silver-colored cars were prime candidates for being repainted....

BINGO! Dunno why, but silver was affected more than any other color.

When the recall was announced, all the news channels carried the story...one newscaster also made a comment about the silver paint.

This wasn't just Ford, this problem also affected GM & Chrysler vehicles.

After reading about the harmful effects that silicone can do with the clear coat, and the fact that just about all waxes back then had it...

That's prolly where the initial problems began.

Today, you can buy myriad brands of waxes containing only carnuba wax specifically used for clear coat.

But...the waxes that contain silicone are right next to them on the shelves of all the autoparts stores.

People are creatures of habit, buy the same brand of wax for years, not knowing that some should NOT be used with clear coat paint!

Bottom Line: Read the label to see what ingredients the wax contains...before buying it.

Yep, my 1981 has single stage paint, so not a problem with the silicone. The fading on mine is due to the old fashioned sunshine and 29+ years

Clear coat started around circa 1985, if I recall correctly, but trucks might have been clear coated since new too that was originally single stage.

Why I said not to get the silicone lubricant on the paint in my previous post. (Unless you know it's single stage paint. However it's great for preserving rubber seals. They will last at least 3 times longer than leaving them dry.

Didn't the fading problem continue on Ford trucks in the early 90's?My dad said they used to bring lots of them in for repaints when he worked at the local Ford dealership.

I agree with everyone else, use a 92-93 cargo lamp gasket. It's alot thicker than the older ones.
