I think it's a bit of a pain to up keep. The stuff was always hazing up on me after each rain shower. But I do keep a little bottle of it just in case my wipers give out while I'm on the road. At least I now it will get me home.
i love rainX. i dont even need to use the windshield wipers most of the time in the rain with it. my 66 mustang's wiper switch went out and i had to have rainx on the windshield to see. it worked great. i've never had the haze on the windshield, i always wipe the windshield off with a clean wrag like the instructions say. whenever i put some on somebody's windshield they always thank me after the first rain.
Years ago Rain x was the only thing on the market to treat our windshields. Now ther is an alternitive and it is called AQUAPEL. We use it on all of our detailing jobs of big rigs and it lasts a minimum of 8 months. Also aquapel is a product of PPG industries the glass people. You can check it out at www.speedymetalpolish.com.
truck was guy
I have found that the RainX is a great product. Before I ever go on a trip, I give it a fresh coat on all windows.
I have found one trick on the application of RainX that works best for me especially since the Excursion has so much glass and I am too short to reach all of the windshield without a lader.
Simply apply the RainX to all windows before you wash your vehicle. Then, simply rinse it off with the water hose while you pre-rinse your vehicle before you wash it. This not only save me a lot of application time, but results with no smearing of the windows!
I have also found that the TripleEdge wiper blades work the best in combination with RainX on the hazing effect when the wipers are on intermittent delay, but when RainX really shows itself, is when the rain is hammering hard, and everyone is pulling over because they can't see.....With RainX, it is no big deal to keep going! Great stuff and to me, makes it much safer to drive in heavy rains.
I also see great benefit to the side windows staying much clearer to view around you.
thats a really good idea on useing the rain-x on the side windows before you wash your car....i wish i had thought of that before. i've used rain-x in my truck and my dad has used rain-x for years in my mom's aerostar and his F-150 and Mitsubishi (before he sold it) and we have never had a problem with it. works great when i'm on the Florida turnpike on the long drive back to south florida and it starts raining. it beads right off and i barely have to use my wipers.
I got ahold of this stuff while I was in school at Auburn that came in an aerosol can. You could apply it the same was as Rain-X or just stand outside the truck with the wipers going and spray it on the wet windsheld, letting the wipers spread it around. This stuff worked great, just not as long but with the ease of application, who cares. I can't remeber the name of it.
Castrol makes something like it in a pump spray but it really sucks!!!!
I agree, great stuff and have used it for many years. I just wish it was usable on acrylics. Motorcycle windshields won't hold up to Rain-X (trust me --- I know! LOL!) Now just wax them.
Otherwise, on all my other GLASS surfaces, it's Rain-X all the way!
I have been using RainX since I can't remember, maybe the mid 70s?
I like the windshield treatment. Most of the time at freeway speeds I usually don't need the wipers except every once in awhile to clean off road spray. After awhile the road spray takes over and you need to retreat. On long wet trips I sometimes retreat at every gas stop or even between. I have recently discoverd that you can even wipe on RainX when everything is wet and don't need to wipe it off, just polish it a bit. With rain anyway, you won't notice the slight smearing RainX makes if you didn't wipe it dry.
I have also used RainX FogX(?) anti fogger on the inside of my windshields. As far as I can tell, it makes the problem worse so I have not used it since maybe 1995. Maybe it has changed but I didn't like that product when I tried it.
I have used RainX windshield washer additive. I am mixed on this one. I am not convinced it prolongs the protective qualities, ie I don't see the water bead up after using it. And after using it the windshield is often blury for maybe 3-5 seconds after the wipers sweep the glass. Not being able to see while driving is unsafe so when my current batch runs out I will probably not buy any more.
Like others have commented, I notice a haze across the winshield when the wiper passes over the winshield. Even without the wipers, I even notice it at night. For these diabetic eyes, that just bites! For cleaning a winshield I find Bonami works great and for $1 a can it will last a year no problem. For now I just go with good wiper blades and change when needed. And yes, as I have sometimes seen the issue brought up. I have 22" blades on my 2000. Factory was 20" but they just didn't cover as well as 22" blades do.
Im a student glider pilot. the club i fly at uses it on all the canopies
. a gliders not jet only moves at 48 mph when in a thermal. we fly pretty close to clouds every once in a while it starts raning up there and runs right off! no wipers and flying at 48mph.
When I was in college my windshield wipers went out. Being the usual penniless college kid with a kickin Pioneer stereo and no money I used rainex for almost a year instead of wipers (Kids don't try this at home)
It really worked well. Really never missed the wipers it worked so well.
Yes I have heard of waxing your windshield. Works well. I mean think about it if you go to the carwash and get hot wax on your car do they mask off your windows first?
I have used RainX quite a few times and love how the water beads right off the window, but I stopped using it because it tends to make my wipers bouce across the windshield. Has anyone else had this problem. I have tried using different types of wiper blades and it doesn't seem to make a difference.
The stuttering wipers might have something to do with wax from the carwash getting on the windshields. My wife's car used to do this.
On my last three vehicles, with well over 300,000 combined miles, I've used it continually(less so in summer than winter). I had some stuttering on my Ranger a few times at the very end of the wiper stroke. But it was more from the dirt build-up/old wiper combination as the skipping would stop when I cleaned the windshield and or replaced the blades.
I usually replace the blades 2-3 times per year. But then again I like my windows clean.
Oh by the way- I tried the application method described in an earlier post (can't find the exact post now) and I was impressed. I'm not sure if the Rain-X lasts as long. I'll have to wait for winter to test it for sure but it will be my choice of application for the future.
The method is too simple- Before washing vehicle clean windows. Apply Rain-X. Here's the tricky part- DO NOT WIPE THE RAIN-X OFF. Simply hose the vehicle down prior to washing it. Wash vehicle- smile next time it rains. I think the hardest part is remembering to do it before you start washing the truck
