Rain-X

I have found Rain-X to be a good product, both the liquid you apply on the windshield as well as the windshield washer fluid. Other than having to apply the liquid periodically, there aren't any downsides. The kids love to watch the water bead up and fly away. I have been able to drive in rain without the wipers on. It works ok on iced up windshields.

The ww fluid is twice the price of the blue stuff, but the blue stuff is garbage. Not much better than straight water.

Any comments or competing products you might be aware of? Thanks.

I have never used it because it tore up my sister's windsheild wipers. but i suppose that is because she used the wipers and you arent supposed to. might give it a whirl one of these days.

I have used it faithfully for years. Although one thing to look out for. The washer fluid will start to collect below your wipers. If left for awhile it can make a real mess. It'll also cake up your wipers. Just make sure to wipe off all the excess buildup.

I rotate Rain-x and the cheap blue stuff every other time. One; to help combat that but also here in New England this time of year I go through almost gallon a week. It worse when things start to thaw. I found that I don't lose any of the rain-X properties in between too!

I haven't used Rain-X in about 7 years. I don't know if the newer version of it are better or not, but it used to leave a film across the windshield whenever it was raining and the wiper would run across the glass.

I just use regular rubbing compounds and car wax. Whenever I wax my paint, I keep going and do all the windows also. Also do the chrome. Does the same thing, and actually I like it better. Don't have to worry about using this product on this, and this product on this. All you have to have extra is a toothbrush, which I use on my truck when I wax it anyway...

Just something to think about...

Yep, wax my windows too.

If you got a problem with waterspots on your windows, you can use most any brand of metal polish to remove them, takes some time but it works for me.

I also used it once several years ago. It seemed to work ok, but I got the film build up too. Haven't used it since.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 14-Feb-02 AT 06:21 PM (EST)]Well, since you asked - - I use Grease Lightning under the hood. Spray it on everything under the hood, then take the water hose and spray it off. Make sure the engine is cold though.

Grease Lightning is the best 'over-all' cleaner I have ever used. I spray it on the bumpers for bugs, tires, even clean the paint if tar or other crap flings off the tires.

I use all kinds of home remedies and 'stuff' ...

Oh yeah - clean your glass, then use a rubbing compound on them. It will help get the windshield wiper depth zone off of the glass.

The water around my house is hard and leaves bad waterspots, so I have to use metal polish and #4 steel wool to get them out.

You can get it at Wal-mart. Either green can or red can. Can't remember which is what "grit".

Wax on the windows, baby oil on the tires, Grease Lightning? thats not oven cleaner is it? Shampoo for the cloth seats?

I seem to have an abundance of diaper rash ointment. Do you have a detailing use for it?

I like these home brewed methods! Come on CobraXP, give us some more!

Here's mine...Disposable diapers work better to dry your truck than chamois cloth or terry towels but...you look stupid using them.

Rain-X

I too had bad luck with rain-x in the far past but my boys are using it on their cars and loving it. I remember this hazy look when the windshield wipers were on intermittent. Tried auto wax once and thought the same. Just put a new windshield in the truck last week and will have to make a discision on which to use now.
