I juts about cried today as you all know cash for clunkers is a evil program of doom. This weekend I spent a wonderful time at my families cabin's in the big horn mountain. on our way down we passed a Ford dealership and FIVE beautiful dent side and two bump side trucks were sitting in the back of the lot not tags for sale perhaps extra money in my pocket a chance to have a pretty new truck sure I pulled on in and went to the front desk to ask about them. ALL had been traded in all had been seized and the dealership refused to let go of them because of the penalties involved.I asked what they are going to do all seven are set to be crushed by friday
I thought only '84 and newer could be traded in on that program...
On a side note - a local news channel did a blurb on this program and they interviewed a local junkyard owner who said they were getting screwed because the only valuable part of the vehicle, the engine, was destroyed at the dealership before it was handed over to the junkyard for crushing...
The program isn't about recycling. It's about getting "polluters" off of the road and destroying them. Period. Can't say I agree with the mentality that pushed this through congress.
Furyus1 is correct though, they've got to be '84 or newer, so that stealership was lying to you.
*******s I have 40k laying around from my army bonus pay I could have had a couple beautiful dents and a new bump well I refuse to buy anything from that dealership ever
No bump or dentsides qualify Furyus1 is right you have to buy a vehicle that gets better milage and there were no EPA milage tests done prior to 84 so there is nothing to base the requirement on. Only 84 and new can be turned in under the CARS program. I think it is a giant waste of taxpayer money but it doesn't effect our turcks at all as apparently they are too old to be clunkers. My parents turned over their 97 explorer on a new focus and it was a good deal for them as you probably couldn't have sold it for $1000, the misses and I also bought a new focus about a month ago but all my stuff was too old heck I would let one of my rusted out heaps go for $3500 but they were all too old. Never my 79 F250 though, I guess I just figure with the money I saved by sacraficing one clunker I could keep two or three going for quite a while. Bet that wasn't really what they had in mind when they dreamed this up.

30 years from now we might just say " man I used to have a 1997 Explorer and I let it go for 3500 bucks."
Sounds silly I know, but many folks just see our stuff as an old truck. Heak, I do. These old trucks are old trucks. Now, dont get me wrong, I love my old trucks as I have several, and you might have a better chance messing around with my wife or kicking my dog than getting between me and my truck. Ok, you will have a problem if you kick my dog. Wife can take care of herself, so good luck with that too, but you get the idea.
Too many decision makers just dont have the appreciation that we do for our old rides and unfortunately they are somewhat justified. We do have old vehicles and sometimes some folks dont like em.
Sad to think that but it is a reality.

dentsides and bumbsides? really? i know i did some reading and they said 1985 was as old as they would go back? if so, please get some pictures of these trucks, as they are breaking the rules,
i hate this whole idea of cash for clunkers, i had a feeling that older stuff might be affected, but then they said 1985 was the cut off, so i felt a little better, still there is a lot of good used cars/trucks and good used parts getting totally destroyed for nothing, and now my fears have risen, there going after older than '85, so many classics will get crushed, and for what?
now there trying to push this program up here, who knows, we might have it already up here in Canada, its all very sad, it just proves how wasteful our society is, from wasting good used vehicles and parts, to wasting tax payer money, when will it end?

And despite what some dealers are doing or what some network news likes to portray, but the traded in vehicles ARE NOT TO BE CRUSHED. Only the engine and drivetrain are to be made inoperative. That's it.
Besides the fact that the dealer, before finalizing the contract, must log-in to the official CARS website and submit the traded in vehicle to make sure it qualifies.
Only vehicles MADE in 1984 and newer qualify. If you have a 1984 Chevy Pick-up, but it was MADE in October 1983 it does not qualify.
So either the dealer lied to you or did not understand what they were doing.
Just Today I saw a very nice early 2000s Dodge Cummins QuadCab Diesel Dually...
That thing was nice, was at a Dealer and they spray painted "Cash 4 Clunkers" on it with red spray paint...

Anything over 8500 GVW automatically qualifies for $3500 in CARS rebate.
However, that truck, unless it is completely trashed, should have been worth triple what the CARS program gave them.

They sold the program to the public under the premise it was a polution program, but lets face it, its really just an auto maker stimulus package. The thing that bugs me besides the fact that many good vehicles are being werecked for no apparent reason if this is truly a program aimed at being more "green," then why not find another means of making sure those particular vehicles dont see the road again, and give them to the auto recyclers as a way of helping them stimulate their business. The other thing I have a hard time with is this: How many people who could not afford a new car, bought them on CARS? Will we see an influx of bank repo and turned back vehicles in the upcoming months? Just some things I have thought about.
