The rule of thumb is if a vehicle is built before April, it gets the current years model, after April, but before September, is the current model year and a 1/2, after September, it's next year's model....in the case of the 99's, Ford tagged them as a 99 for the entire year of 98 until April 99...
There you go....mystery solved.....
My "early" 2003 was built in July 2002...

My 06 was built 4-06 Have a buddy that has a '97 F-150 built mid '95 and has been confirmed it was the FIRST F150 4x4 ext cab to roll off the line, was shipped straight to Kicker (the speaker company) as a demo vehicle.
I've found all kinds of stickers underneath and behind body panels with 2/26/09 marked on them. My best guess is my truck was assembled during the last part of February and shipped shortly thereafter. I took delivery on 3/14/09.
I know the vin will say the date but tag has useful info I am even missing the original manual. But I know that can be ordered online..
I would call Ford (http://www.ford.com/owner-services/c...t/contact-ford) and ask them if you can get another sticker. I don't remember who I contacted at Ford when I bought mine (used), but I got a build sheet for my truck sent to me for free.
As for an owner' manual. If you don't care about the convenient one that fits in your glovebox, you can save/print out a copy of everything here:
