power steer/hydro boost fluid

Am I correct that on a '95 F53 stripped chassis the power steering/brake hydro boost pump uses ATF fluid?
Thanks

I don't think an F150 owner would know too much about the coachman/ mobile home chasis...
But hey, you never know. Sorry I couldn't help.

Thanks Popa Tim, I'm thinking the F53 is no different than the 350, 450. Anyway, I know the pump is supposed to have power steering fluid but it has a red cast like AFT. I suspect someone has added AFT errorously. The real question I have is about draining and re-filling the system UNLESS someone can tell me that there used to be a RED power steering fluid!!??

GM power steering used to use plain old red Dextron ATF.

Hey guys, I really appreciate your replys, but I'm getting more confused by the minute. Right on the reservoir is a notice that states: "use only approved power steeriring fluid".
I would really like to find a chassis service manual, but have not been able to find one. Anybody got one for sale let me know.

Looking at the Ford F53 Motorhome Chassis service guide it says this:
For the power steering pump use ATF type "F".
For the Hydro-Boost Unit it say to "Fill the power steering pump reservoir with Motorcraft Mercon Multi-Purpose ATF XT-2-QDX or equivalent.

Sounds like the book is saying two different things but all Ford trucks take Type "F" in the PS Pumps and never put power steering fluid in any Ford.

Thanks Bill,
The confusing thing is that the sticker on the reservoir says "fill only with recommended power steering fluid" why didn't they just say "with recommended ATF"???
That would be to easy I guess.

Hahahha - just so you would get confused and take it to the dealer to fill would be my guess.

No doubt you are EXACTLY right on. You'll love this -- today I went by the local Ford dealer, stopped in the Parts Dept., and said "I need a couple of quarts of fluid for my '95 F53 power steering/brake hydra-booster reservoir". Twenty minutes later, with all the "parts gurus" huddling, the counter-man came back: "we can't find it on the computer, we would GUESS it should be Type F".

Why did Ford sell their truck division?? -- I just can't figure it out!!!

Best part: I decided to ask the "experts" at FORD> I sent them an email requesting the info -- will probably get a reply in a couple of weeks. I'll be on the road before then with Type F in the reservoir.\
Thanks to all.

Ford dealerships suck for parts. They never have anything in stock... EVER. Or, they cant even find the part or diagram in the computer (ex. my heater hose/core/thermostat diagram)
