Hello all i am brand new here and i just have a question
I jsut picked up a near mint 73-77 grille shell (cant afford the 200 bucks for a new one!) and the only thing wrong is there are two dents one on each side(the smooth flat sides) and i was jsut wondering if these would come out?(they seemed like they should easily enough?) I figured they would so i took her home and i tried to just push them out with my thumb but i hink its gonna take a bit more than that it seems?
Do you think they would come out and if they do (i hope!) what tools should i use not to damage the aluminum?
wood, plastic and hard rubber hammers work well with aluminum
i have always tryed to get dents out of original shells rather than buy the cheap chinese crap
Yep, use a hard non-metal hammer, and make sure the pounding areas are nice and clean and flat, or that they match the desired contour. Lay the other side on wood as you hammer. When you hammer, start hammering softly at first, then increase pressure as needed, checking the dent after each blow, until the dent is out. Try to make nice dead blows (minimal hammer rebound). Aluminum is soft, so be careful.
I banged a couple of dents out my grill, but one mangled corner had to be mended with JB Weld, sanded, and I've painted the whole grill with silver high performance rim paint. Actually looks pretty good.
