A couple of weeks back, I posted that I had a ruined transmission. The repair shop said it was not worth fixing. I looked all over New Mexico and Texas and could not find a 1991 transmission for a Super Duty. I did locate a 1992 ZF 5 speed, so I bought it. When it got here it was 1 foot shorter than my transmission, so thats where I am now. I could lengthen the drive shaft but I would also lose my emergency brake. It appears the Super Duty trucks use a 4wd transmission and transfer case and the transfer case is what the emergency brake fastens to. My truck did not make any grinding sounds on the drive home, but I know the bearing in the transfer case is bad. The mechanic got the cases separated about .5 to .7 inches and it would not come off.
Does anyone have any ideas on how to get these cases apart, or has anyone had this problem before?
I sure would like to have a look inside that transfer case.
t case in these trucks are chain driven nothing speical there but a tcase on a 2wd that just weird can u find a 4wd trany
I would never has suspected these trucks used a 4WD transmission. I suppose it was for running a PTO. A lot of them were used for wreckers and dump trucks. Finding a used 4WD transmission is going to be very difficult.
