I'm trying to determine which AT I have in my 2001 Expedition (Eddie Bauer, 4x4, 5.4L V-8). My owners manual lists the possibilities as 4R70W, which requires Mercon V & 4R100, which requires Mercon. Given the VIN over the phone, the dealer says the possibilities are 4R100 or E40D. But, since I didn't own the vehicle for the first 64k miles, and Ford can't find any records of it having been serviced by their dealers, I'd really like to confirm what I have by looking at the tranny itself, since there are dire warnings about using the wrong AT fluid.
The label on the tranny has a bunch of fields: 9U, 1L3P-BC, PRB-GV, 00005327, BD-1D10 (or it might be 3D- or 8D-), 7538, and M-4x4-T. On the housing itself is molded Ford, RFF81P-7006-AA 01, 34 & 74 1. The dealer said it should be stamped on the pan, but all I'm seeing there is Ford, Metric and "Pan is equipped with a reusable gasket." Finally, the door pillar sticker shows TR: E, which someone on another forum told me is the 4R100, but I don't know where they got that info or if it's accurate. (And there's always the remote possibility the tranny was switched by the previous owner, since it seems there are 3 that fit.)
Hope someone here can tell me with some certainty which AT I have, and/or point me to some official or knowledgeable site with an explanation of these fields.
It's my understanding that Mercon has been discontinued and Mercon V has been reformulated to work in Mercon applications. I used the new Mercon V in my Excursion which has the 4R100 without any problems. You can also do some searches in the Transmission Forum that I'm sure will confirm this.
I'd be willing to bet you have the 4R100 transmission. That is what my 2002 Expy has and the 4R100 is listed as the transmission for 4x4 models. Perhaps the other transmission you listed is for the 4.6 models? Not sure.
Some transmission fluids may be labeled as dual usage, such as MERCON and MERCON V. These dual usage fluids are not to be used in an automatic transmission that requires use of the MERCON type fluid. However, these dual usage fluids may be used in transmissions that require the MERCON V type fluid.
MERCON and MERCON V type fluids are not interchangeable. DO NOT mix MERCON and MERCON V. Use of a transmission fluid that indicates dual usage (MERCON and MERCON V) in an automatic transmission application requiring MERCON may cause transmission damage. Use of any fluid other than the recommended fluid may cause transmission damage.
Hence my concern. If anything ever goes wrong with my tranny, and I've got the wrong fluid in it, you can bet my third party mechanical breakdown insurance won't cover it.

In 2001 that was true but a few years ago that changed as I said above. Just do some research.

Superceded by TSB a couple of years ago. Use the TSB library (link at top of page) to research.
Hi, this is what you are looking for I think. You can search for trans codes both here and on the internet, lots of good info about both main trans for the Expedition.
