Did it pop loudly, as if something broke? Have you or someone else recently done maintenance on it?

Make sure the transfer case is in 2 wheel high. Mess with it and pull it back into 4 wheel high and see if it will move.

82 f150

It is in 2wd and it wasn't a real loud pop. I tried putting it in 4 hi and low to see if it would pull but won't. It hasn't been worked on

I'm at a loss as to what could cause this. Have you checked to see that the drive shaft is still connected?

By not going into gear, do you mean you cannot get the shifter into to move, or that the truck simply doesn't move when you put it into any gear?
Shifter going into gear locations, but nothing happens, usually either a clutch disc center broke out OR a broken input shaft in the trans. Both require dropping the trans to repair.

I would think either of those would be a lot more than a small "pop". But, then anything that breaks in the driveline would be more than a small "pop".
