Does he have a multimeter to check ICP voltages (per link above)? After that I am out of suggestions without a good scan tool.
I know that there is a defuel feature at a certain speed (90 something). I did not think that it shutdown the engine though. There is a speed sensor in the wheel w/ the ABS sensors. I just don't recall enough about its operation to say that could do it - I tend to think not, but I was just trying to connect the braking w/ the shut-down.
Please keep us posted on the progress and solution.
I had my '00 do the same thing. there is a fuel shut off if you get into an accident, and the manual reset, on my truck anyway, is under the pass. side kick panel. hope that helps some. good luck!
Reset was pushed previously, fuel bowl is getting fuel. 0.24 at ICP, I think we have it narrowed down. Waiting to see what Bismic is thinking, according to the linked thread could be IPR but the OP for that thread it ended up being STC fitting. Do you agree, Mark? BTW thanks a million for sticking w/ me through this. Can someone hit him w/ some rep for me, I have to spread some more love... Thanks!
Yeah, seems like the problem. He's going to have it towed and get Ford to fix it. Thanks to all that helped, especially you Mark. Priceless, esp. the link you provided to narrow it down. Good thing they had a MM to check voltages. Again, thanks! I gotta go move a wood stove now. Yeah!
Glad to help. Sorry it wasn't somthing easily fixed. I know it is a PITA to go through all the troubleshooting steps and then find out it is something that Ford will need to repair, but you never know at the beginning. It is always good to know what needs to be done before taking the truck in - especially if you are on a trip, in a strange town, w/ limited time!
Folks need to hit jboczar w/ some rep points also. His tip has now helped a number of folks!
I know I carry a multimeter in the truck now!
Have a good weekend Tim - It was kind of you to spend the morning helping your friend.
Yeah, apparently hes from NJ around Wildwood and he's up the mountains near Bloomsburg. I'll hit jboczar w/ some well-deserved rep, I can't hit you with any yet. And that's what friends are for! As far as the diagnostic, I agree- you don't know until you rule things out, like I told him- now he can tell the dealer what he found out and help them along. But I'm sure they can just plug it in to their fancy computer and have 'er figured out in a jiffy. You also have a good week-end.
EDIT: CRAP- can't hit him w/ rep either!!!!
One final thing on this. I got a call later in the evening from my buddy. Seems some "diesel mechanic" was there at the campground and proceeded to shoot some ether into the dead truck. Well it fired and ran for a bit. When I got the call they had turned the truck off and, well-surprise- it wouldn't restart. I explained this is a symptom of a STC leak, no start when warm, and I recommended he NOT let the "diesel mechanic" shoot any more ether into his buddies truck, and certainly don't mention it to the dealer when he has it towed over there. I'll have my buddy let me know what exactly Ford does to the truck, but I think we have it pretty much narrowed down. Thanks again for everyones help!
