finding a receiver hitch

I'm having trouble finding the right receiver hitch for my 97 F-250. I've ordered two from Napa with no luck yet. The first one was supposedly "bolt on" but was much lighter (class 3) than I told them I wanted. The second one is a class 4 but looks like it will have issues clearing the bumper.

Is there a certain hitch I should be looking for? I want at least class 4, and I have a factory step (no drop) bumper. I also want to keep the spare tire underneath. Any recommendations on what to look for and where? I need to get something quickly...my F-150 is all I have now to tow with.

You'll have a tough time finding anything class 4 or heavier that will let you keep the spare undeneath. Go to www.reeseprod.com .

I didn't like anything factory made so I made my own, 1'2 inch plate down the sides of the frame 4 inch square tubing welded in between than a receiver welded to that, 3/8 gusset from tubing to receiver 3 3/4 inch grade 8 bolts on each side in sheer loading

helifixer... WOW!

1/2" plate, 3/4" bolts!

I have a 42" extension hitch I built myself and I used 3/8" plate and 5/8" grade 8 bolts. I thought I was doing overkill.

I had good luck, price-wise and quick-shipping-wise, with southwestwheel.com a div of trailerhitch.com . I got a 15k gtwr hitch for my superduty that was a great fit and cheaper than the trailer place around here and shipped to my door!

As much as it may scare you, check with a ford dealer, one out in the country. Mine cost no more than a class 3 from a trailer place. Even installed it was cheaper than running around trying to find one.

Find a U-Haul dealer that installs hitches. Mine is a Class 4, the spare clears, and less than $200 installed. It did require drilling by the installer. Since I bought it in 1996 the price may be a bit higher now.

Well tonight I installed the class 4 from Napa (Valley brand). I really need to haul a vehicle tomorrow and once I test fitted it, it looked like it would work. I'm much happier with it than I thought I would be. It did require drilling, but looks good and the spare clears. The only thing now is where to put my light plugin. I wanted a factory one in the factory spot, but it looks like that won't work with any receiver hitch.

Mine mounts next to the ball on the bottom of the step bumper, far as I know the original spot. That reminds me, I broke the cover door off the factory one and still need to R2 the part.
