I've got the ZF 5spd in my '97 F250 with PSD. Bought the truck about a month and a half ago, and so far I'm ecstatic over it!! A coworker who has a 96 with the same tranny says it actually has automatic transmission fluid in it and that because the truck has over 100,000 miles, that this should be changed. I, being the ignorant soul that I am regarding things automotive, never thought about changing the fluid in a manual transmission. So what's the scoop? Does it need changing? What about a fluid recommendation? I've heard this transmission is very expensive to rebuild or replace, so I want to make this one last as long as I expect the truck to. Also, what about the rear diff lubrication? Should it be changed as well? and if so, with what??? Thanks.

97 F250HD, SC, 4X2, PSD, 5spd, 3:55LS, K&N, Pioneer CD and spkrs, and that's all so far, because I still don't know what to add to make the truck any better yet!!!
Affirmative to everything your friend said. At 100,000 miles you are due for a fluid change in the tranny and the rear axle if it hasn't been done previously. You will get different answers from different people, but I like to change the fluid in all of my gearboxes (tranny, axles, and transfer case) at 24,000 miles or 2 years whichever comes first, except for the rear axle which I like to do at 12,000 miles or 1 year because it is limited slip. This is a pretty aggressive schedule but I figure it is cheap insurance given the cost of rebuilding or replacing these components. The ZF-5spd takes Mercon automatic transmission fluid or an equivalent. I use Mobil-1 automatic tranny fluid in mine. The rear axle takes either 80w-90 or 75w-140 gear oil. The owner's manual specifies the 80w-90, but I have heard others say and have seen in the shop manual that 80w-140 is preferred for severe service applications. I use Mobil-1 75w-90 gear oil (I figure 75w is close enough to 80w). Good luck with it.
Affirmative on the synth atf in the manual trans. Ask Ford, They should be able to tell you. After all who knows your Ford vehicle better than the people that engineered it?
