New To Me!!!
Ain't it wonderful to know I married the right woman!!! For my birthday, my loving wife bought (or allowed me to buy) a 1997 F-250 Heavy Duty, SuperCab, PSD, with 5-spd tranny, 3.55 limited slip. It's a beautiful truck, but I've never owned a diesel. So, some questions. . .
1) What's the HP/Torque output.
2) Is this the Mazda transmission, and is it strong enough for this engine? I figure it must be if they put it in there, but I want some unbiased opinions.
3) If I'm towing a 7,000lb (give or take) travel trailer, can I tow in 5th gear, or should I stick to 4th.
I LOVE this truck, and I baby my trucks, so I plan to make this motor last for years and years. How many miles can I reasonably expect from this motor?
Somebody try and help me out here.
Thanks,
Rotorhead, owner of 3 full-size Ford trucks now, with no money left to buy gas or diesel!!!

LAST EDITED ON 30-Oct-01 AT 03:17 AM (EST)[p]As I recall (I'm sure if my recollections are incorrect somebody will correct me) the H/P was 235 and the torque was 500 for '97.
2) As far as I know it was a Warner transmission. It is a strong transmission but the gears were cut so that it gave some gear noise. To counter the noise issue Ford used a dual mass flywheel which may (or may not) give some trouble at some point.
3) The torque peaks on this engine between 1800 and 2200 RPM so I believe you'll know when to run in fourth and when to run in fifth. As long as you're able to maintain your speed without having the pedal to the metal, run fifth gear. For hilly terrain you'll probably want fourth.

Your transmision is a ZF-42cr ( german made ).
Not bad but have steel synro blocking rings rather than brass.
Seem to die quick. I'd change tranny oil a little more than specs. Dual mass flywheel are spring loaded and a pain.

go out and get a bottle of FW-16. on a 97? drain the coolant and re-fill, put the entire 16 oz of fw-16 in with the new antifreez.
very important. 8oz every 15,000 miles. after that enjoy the new toy
