I had my Expy in for brakes and while it was up on the rack I got up under it and looked around. I noticed that the rearmost muffler sounded like it was full (made a very dull sound when I knocked on it) and it got to wondering about putting duals on my baby.
I also noticed that there were two sets of catalytic converters and I was wondering if I would have too little back pressure if I ran a pipe from each side? The mechanic advised to replace the stock muffler with a flowmaster 40 and just have that and not duals. I just want a little more power and a little more MPG, I don't want a loud exhaust.
I tried searching the threads but didn't find what I was looking for.
I would go with a Gibson muffler. They are almost as quiet as stock but are just as free flowing as Flowmasters or other brands. I would also take off the second muffler which I think is for reducing the sound inside the cabin (unsure what the name of it is). Along with a K&N filter and it should boost a little power and MPG like you want. Taking all extra weight off the vehicle does not hurt either. I don't run with a spare, took the tow hooks and other items I never use off. I did all that with an 02 supercrew 5.4L 4x4 I had and was getting about 19 on the highway running at 65 mph believe it or not.
