I suspect it is your flywheel being turning the crank a little must have gotten it by the bad spot . You will most likely find the ring gear bad in four evenly spaced places around due to where the crank stops because of compression . You can change the flywheel without completely removing the transmission . If you remove the trans to engine bolts and replace a couple of them with some extra long ones you can then slide the trans back on those bolts. The drive shaft will still have to be removed but some times you can leave the cooler lines, wire harnesses , and linkage hooked up . This saves you a lot of time and makes reinstall a snap (just slide back forward ) its already lined up .

Flywheels are available from a lot of places , Autozone has them for about $50.00 . The bolts need to be about 4 inches long . You need enough room to get a torque wrench between the flywheel and the converter . Also be shure the converter is loose from the flywheel and stays all the way back the transmission when you slide it back.
