What is this part?

It's in a hose that runs from my AC compressor. Fixin to replace the compressor and this part looks to be in bad shape so i figured i'd replace it too. Only problem is i have no idea what it is...and other trucks don't have it. Thanks fellas,

Josh

That piece is Damper for the AC. Dont run flush through it. So they say I have and got lucky. If you want to replace it, replace the entire line. It should come with a new one. Or get one out of a newer model, line with out the damper. If you going with an oem compressor (from ford {visteon}) I have elimnated those before with no bad side effects. just realize your freon charge will be a little. I have 1990 f150 with the same setup.

That thing is a muffler, you can't really replace just that part, you have to replace the entire hose assy. If you are running R134a you need to replace all the rubber hoses with barrier hoses anyway.

replace them all? So they're not meant to work with the new refrigerant? I thought when they did the retrofit they would've changed all that. So what exactly am I going for then?

Thanks

The molecules on R134a are smaller than R12 and will leak thru the hose unless you have barrier hoses. Barrier hoses have a plastic inner-liner to prevent the refrigerant from going thru the hose. Last time I bought one, the hose assy. for your truck ran about $160 but it's been a few years.
