i have a 302 that i started to build up i have a edelbrock cam in it and already bored 40 over and has a edelbrock 4 barrel on it and i was wondering if i could do anything else to it to get more power.
Change the heads if it still has the stock 77 heads on it. If you want to stay factory get some GT40 heads, or some GT40p heads, but the P's sometimes need special ($$$) headers. If you can't find any GT40 heads then I believe E7 heads are the next best factory ones. Either will be a big improvement over the 77 smog heads.
Depends on where you get them. Used from the junkyard, ebay, or something or new. I'd guess between $300-500. The P heads are usually cheaper because of the special header requirements.
Yeah look for a 93 cobra in the junk yards and if by some miracle from god you find one i will put my first born on it that it will have no engine, but seriously you can find gt40 heads on 93-94 cobras and first gen lightnings and gt40p heads on exploders with the 5 liter engines. I know theres companies out there selling gt40 heads and you might want to try craigslist. I have them on my 93 cobra and am not to impressed but i think they would be good for your application, you could also check some mustang websites and get a good idea where to look. There should be a GT cast on the heads and thats how you can identify them
i have thought about the edelbrock heads. i have found that they are to far out of my price range. i there anything i can do to the stock heads to get some extra power with out risking damageing the heads or block.
The cheapest thing to do would be to get some GT40s or E7s instead of dumping money into the smog heads. Do a search for threads in the engine forum for ID tips. The GT40s for instance have 'GT40' stamped on the back of the head. If you did want to try and work the stock heads you could start by milling them to raise the compression a little. How much you mill of course will determine what else you need to modify. I would check out the small block forum and get some tips.
started reassembly on a freinds 302 and it turns fine with out the heads on but put the heads on it locks up put a little bit of pressure on it and it spins the rod bearings what would be the coz of that i cant figure it out
you may need to take a die grinder to some metal if the problem continues a trick my dad taught me is use some cheap lipstick on the head and rotate the assembly the lipstick will rub off at contact points so you can grind it exactly remeber to avoid sharp corners tough and go solw you don't want to take off to much material.
