I too can vouch that Kris will offer his time and his garage almost any time. And is a good teacher at that. I have been there a couple times and he has made a generous offer once again.
I can say that it is a different environment here on FTE compared to other forums.
I never thought that this post was offensive from the get-go. As with any question, there is no quicker way to get an answer than to ask the knowledge base. It's far quicker to post a thread and ask everybody than to PM or e-mail somebody and wait for an answer.
Maybe 17 years in the Navy has raised my tolerance or skewed my limit on what I find offensive, but it would take a lot more than that to get me riled up. A man's got a right to know!
The question may not have been worded ideally, but I'd say it was valid. Here's my thinking:
If Kris had emailed/PM'd Clay "How are you different/better/insert preferred word here?" He'd get an honest answer, but one opinion. An open question to the community gets multiple answers, and thus a more complete picture.
The definition part, while a bit much, helps clarify the thought process. In essence, "Why give your company a name with a negative connotation?" TECHNICALLY, "riffraff" is negative.
That being said, I dig the name. A little "devil may care" is awesome! Plus it all really boils down to the products & service, and I think we've gotten a good indication about that.
I haven't bought anything yet from Clay, but I am liking what I'm seeing (and hearing) so it's likely a purchase will happen. Products only get you so far; it's the details & customer service that will make or break a business, and Riffraff is getting to be one of the creme de la creme. (Better start drinkin' yer beer with a pinkie out Clay!)
I was going to post about what we have seen come and go here, but I see you have been on longer than both of us. Kris asked a legitimate question but it seems he is so far ahead of normal folks here in mods that he has lost the bubble. Clay is not going to be the first choice of hard core modders because he has not been doing this as long as others. Everyone starts somewhere.
So people with a lot of mods arent normal? How does this come about? And I dont see in any way how having many mods plays a role in the question. yes it shouldve been done in a pm. but yall are being wayy to hard on him, he just asked a simple question. Dont get me wrong i really like dealing with clay, the price breaks and costumer service is great, but no need to be this offended by the questions he asked.
Kris, Ill try to shed a little light on your naming question, simply for the fact that when Clay flew me up to Oregon to help do his early 99 conversion I kinda asked him the same question. Simple answer is: A few years ago when clay was competivley racing bikes, he and a few of his friends were refered to as Riffraff at the track because they did not have the money to have the finest bikes, the nicest trailer, or the best equipment. He and his friends started winning and the folks would say that buch of Riffraff won again, so he made a team and named it Riffraff Racing. The trailer that Andrew(Jkidd) is refering to, is stored in a warehouse and does have a big ole Pigpen on the side of it with Riffraff Racing plastered all over it.
He thought it would make an interesting name for his company because lately modders, whether it be ricers, the blacksoot crowd, or the hotrod gasser crowd, have all come under fire by the "normal" folks and have recieved bad press. The "normal" folks percieve us as Riffraff, so why not have a place that caters to our needs.
I have been to Oregon twice, to help Clay with his truck, and the first Riffraff event, He and Kristen(his wife) are good Christian people.
I know you and know you meant no harm in the question you were asking. Hell, even I had the exact same question you did, but I had the advantage of being there in Oregon and having him explain it to me. A lot of other folks on this board have thought the same question, but have just not ever asked it.
Great explanation, Brandon.... thanks. We're also gonna miss you this weekend, Brandon... wish you could have made the trip up there with us to RRE (Benjamin and Timothy are both going with me).
I know.... completely off topic!
Might be a good time to move on to other topics anyway.
Well I don't mod my truck to much since it's not paid off yet and when it is payed off I will mod. I PM'ed Clay about air bags and prices and he didn't get back to me with prices just the fact that he can get them. I will be getting mod stuff from him when the time comes.
Good post Brandon. We use a lot of (slang) names around here. If you look some of the words up in the dictionary, there is a difference in meaning to these. I had a dog named Bear.
Not only am I from Oregon, but I went to HS just down the road from where RR is located. So I am utterly offended by the company name and thus want this thread wiped clean from FTE servers for ever! Brandon, you know SW Oregon is so much cooler than Alabama
I can vouch for Kris, to know him is to like him, had the pleasure to meet up with him last year at Carlisle, inteligent young man that would give the shirt off his back to help anybody. Could have the Riffraff question been asked a little differently, yes, but again, it was asked. He's offered his 4 inch blocks to me and even told me to come down before I leave for RRE to put them on, shows what kind of people we have here. Thanks Kris. Now get that monster out of the garage and come on down to RRE, we'd love to have yaa..........I'll be your bodygaurd, lol...Just J-K...
