i was wondering if off road diesel was ULSD and also was wondering if the ULSD would hurt my 1974 john deere 1050 tractor i usually only run the off road diesel in it but sometimes i ain't got a choice also would it hurt to put the 2 stroke oil in the tractor?
all fuel oils are ulsd now. unless you find some old stock its going to be ulsd. it will not hurt your old tractor. conventional motor oil will destroy your engine in that old beast. be sure to run a high zinc phosphate race oil or run the zddp additive otherwise you will be destorying the guts of the old gal
In a nutshell, the new diesel rated oil that is suppose to be reverse compatible doesn't have the necessary stuff in it that protects the cams and lifters in the old engines, if I understand it correctly.
As for the ULSD in an old farm tractor, I would be adding something for lubrication. The new stuff may not hurt it, but I wouldn't chance it. My Dad found out that Power Service makes his 2440 John Deere run smoother. He uses the gray bottle with the anti-gel. It also boosts the cetane a few points too.
just do a web search on zddp removal from engine oil and you will be amazed at the damage it causes by not having it in flat tappet motors. it is across the board, not just old diesels.
i personally run this- http://www.zddplus.com/ in my charger.
you can also go to any gm dealer and order "gm EOS" that is gm's version that they used to sell with every new engine. its not as good as the zddplus but its still nice stuff.
i just read up on that stuff and i'm kinda worried i have put 300 hours on this tractor with just regular mobil delvac and the total hours on it are 4382
so whats the chances of the engine being trashed?
anyone ever use the mystic oil its a 15w 50 sythic blend??
i would just install the additive if its running good. you wil know if a cam is wiped or wiping, misses, loads up, loss of overall power, harder starts...etc, etc
