Too much oil?

Is it harmful to overfill the oil in your engine by a small amount? Is there any leeway? The owners manual for my '83 Bronco says that you can overfill the oil by about 1/2" and it will be okay. On the other hand, I have a 460 out of a '72 Lincoln in my '86 Bronco and overfilled it a little. Does anyone maybe have a manual for a '72 Lincoln that might say how far you can fill the oil, or is "full" full? I would like to know because the engine leaks oil and it would be nice to just keep the extra oil in there so I won't have to replace it as soon.

Too much oil?

over the weekend i just gave my truck a little sip to bring the oil level up and yes i had to make sure i did not put too much oil in the crankcase or i would be draining it from the oil plug .if you put way too much in the oil can foam up and cant lubricate properly and funny things can happen along the way. if its a tad over dont worry but if you feel you put way too much in just drain it out from the oil pan plug then check to see on the dip stick to bring it up to the max line

Too much oil?

I try very hard not to over fill but the couple of times I have the extra oil usually shoots out the dip stick hole..

Full is full. It is a bad idea to put extra oil in just because you don't want to fill it as often.

Too much oil?

I didn't intentionally overfill the oil. I filled the oil filter and put five quarts in the engine. The oil was still low so I dumped in the rest of the quart I used on the filter, but that overfilled the oil. It isn't like I said,"Hey, I think I'll overfill the oil so I don't have to add it as often". But I just assume not drain the extra if it isn't harming anything. Does anyone have an owners manual for a '72 Lincoln?

Too much oil?

haha...u guys think 1/2" is a lot. I heard from someone that worked at a gas station/cafe thats in my auto class, that a lady came in and bought like 10 quarts of oil. she couldn't see the oil through the valve cover so she kept adding until it came up to the top of the valve cover!!!!! I don't know if she tried to start it, but it had to be hillarious for the guy that saw it!!!!!

Ref the 72 Lincoln. I have the factory books on the 74 Lincoln and it lists 5 quarts with filter change for the 1974 460 cubic inch Lincoln. The same engine in a Torino or Cougar holds 7 quarts.:-X23
