How much should I overfill the manual trans?

Hey Guys,

I'm doing some maintenance to the truck tonight and I thought I'd overfill the manual trans since I'm sure the shop didn't overfill it when they tore it apart to replace the bearings last Fall.

I'm using Redline D4 ATF; the same fluid the shop filled it with, but I can't remember how much I should overfill it by. I have a little over a quart at my disposal.

Thanks in advance!

Thanks Bill! I know I could go pull out the manual, but I'm being lazy: How many quarts does it call for?

Thanks again!

I think they normally hold about 3 to 3 1/2 quarts.

They only need to be overfilled 1 quart if you have an SMF and have loud gear rollover. The extra quart is just helping to quiet down the gear rollover. Otherwise, fill it to the fill plug and be done.

I put a nice, even four quarts in there. I figure that's a good benchmark number, being one gallon.

I put five in mine cause the gear rollover was pretty loud. After I run it while and change the fluid, I probably won't put five back in.

I think I have 5 in mine also. IIRC it takes 3 1/2 quarts, I put 4 in and wanted a little more so I just put the whole 5th one in there. So 1 1/2 quarts overfilled.

That's pretty much what I did. Figured 5 couldn't hurt.
I've been thinking about putting a barbed hose fitting in the filler hole on my trans and t-case, and run 3/4" hose up the frame rail on the driver's side and up by the brake booster with ball valves on the ends of the hoses. Then I could just pour the fluid in that way and don't half to lay under the truck and pump......and pump, and pump.... Think that would work?

I just pull the shifter out, stick a funnel in there and fill it up. Only takes 5 minutes to pull the shifter.

Yeah that's the way I over filled the trans, but I'm talking about for regular fluid changes for the trans and t-case. I'm probably just over thinking it though LOL!! My wife says I do that a lot......over think things.

No sense making it more complicated than it needs to be, IMHO. Just pull the shifter for fluid changes.

Yeah, I pull the shifter when I change the fluid. The t-case doesn't need to be overfilled and can be filled from under the truck really easily.
