So, the other day I was driving and all at once I got a really bad running condition. It starting stuttering and missing so that I was almost flooring it, but could only get about 20 mph. Luckily I was able to limp home without having to be towed. I shut it down, restarted and it was running pretty good. Good enough to drive anyway. I pulled three codes that said COP 4, 5, 6 were bad. I went ahead and replaced all 8 a few days ago. #5 was so bad that it there was a spark between the top of the COP and the engine block. I thought that was probably bad. Anyway... it park it idles nice and smooth. No problem there. Once I put it in gear it starts to stutter and whatnot like it doesnt want to run. When I begin to move its a big sluggish, but things get a bit better when I get some RPM and speed going.
When you changed the COPs did you change the plugs too? If this was going on for a while a couple of those plugs could be fouled. The other thing to try (if you didn't do so when changing the COPs) is to disconnect the battery for 10 minutes, then reconnect it. The computer might be using bad learned programming from the bad COPs to try and control the engine with the now good COPs.
No, I was hoping I could get by without changing the plugs. I tried to pull one and I couldnt even get it to move, so I didn't want to create a larger problem.
I suppose I can try the battery thing without cutting up my hands anymore.
No, I was hoping I could get by without changing the plugs.
Sorry to be so blunt, but it was rather dumb not to change them. You have 93K miles on them and they get changed out at 100K. So now in another 7K miles you have to pull out the COPs again to change the plugs.
Yes, anytime you change the COPs always change out the plugs too. The problem could be from either one. For $20 more, its worth changing the plugs as well since you are already in there. Change the plugs and make sure all electrical connections are solid and the problem should be fixed. Not sure why you would get 4,5, and 6 all go bad at the same time.
I probably should have changed the plugs at the time, but as I said I was leary since I couldnt get that one to even move. I guess I will give it a shot this week, and while I have it all apart I am going to check the injectors and clean em, replace any that are busted. Also gonna replace that PCV elbow on the back while its easier to get to.
I am also kinda wondering if its really missing, and not more of a surge. When I give it a little gas to take off from a stop it acts like it doesnt want to go until I really give it some gas and it takes off like it should. Also, I started it today with the door open and there is an awful racket coming from it sounds like the gas tank. Its on that side in the rear anyway.
The feller at the Ford house said the noise I described from the gas tank was in fact the fuel pump dying. So I ordered one tonight and will tackle that project when it comes in and I burn a little more gas off. 3/4 of a tank is too much deal with when dropping the tank.
I replaced the fuel pump today and it wasnt alot of fun really. I dont have starting problems anymore... There was a hole in one of the plastic lines on the fuel pump. I still have a misfire and I think I am going to the dealership in the morning for a diagnostic to find out which cylinder is the problem. I am tired of jacking with it.
