Changing Flywheel

Need to change the flywheel on 97 5.4L Expy 4x4 with bad teeth . On older stuff I used to put long studs in the bellhousing bolts and sneak the transmission back just enough to get to the flywheel bolts , and not having to pull the trans out. Is the enough room to do this or has any one done it this way on this newer stuff.

I don't know if your idea will work because besides the tranny, you have the transfer case and front drive shaft to deal with.
