I'm gonna also see if I can pick up a new water pump for the Cherokee tomorrow.
Beat -that-!
(It does in fact need a new water pump...one of the seals is going out on it, and it's leaking coolant out....it's $8 every time we have to buy another bottle of coolant to keep it full)
speaking of leaking coolant.
how can i tell if the heater core on my truck went out...
i found a new, very clean looking spot on my truck
and i don't know if it was from getting to careless when refilling the transmission, or from the heater core going kaput.
reason I ask, is because last time i refilled her, it was really dark, so I couldnt tell how much was spilled, if any (transmission fluid)
and the new oily looking spot is on the firewall right by the blower for the a/c, and the dipstick for the tranny
I'd just wipe that spot clean with a rag or something, and wait and see if any coolant starts showing up there. Last time I saw a heater core go out was on my granddad's old Ford Futura, and that one started leaking coolant right on my feet, when I was in the passenger seat in front. Also, I think the heater core is on the cab side of the firewall (inside the cab, I mean), so if it was leaking, I wouldn't think you'd see coolant under the hood, unless it was leaking from the hose connection or something.
Are you actually losing any coolant?
My truck seems to make a bit of its coolant disappear occasionally, but I have no idea where it's going. I see no leaks or anything, no spots on the ground underneath it. Huh.

I had a similar mystery on a 1984 Honda for several months before the head gasket finaly blew. The oil never turned milky until the major failure, but the gasket looked like coolant may have been seeping in to the #4 cylinder for some time.
A failing heater core would probably drip on to the front passenger's feet, and you would also smell hot coolant.

i didn't see any drips inside the cab, just the outside spot.
and since i t has been raining so much, i couldn't check the floor below the truck, water had drained most of the mess away.
so, later today I'll get to checking that i guess
Only drips I ever see coming from my truck are transmission fluid. In the future when I have the time and money, I'm probably going to swap in a manual. Most likely it'll be a factory-option Ford unit, so I can just swap it in as opposed to modifying a bunch of stuff to get it to fit.
Jmeyer, if you heater core is gone bad a few symptoms are...
Leaking fluid inside cab at passangers feet.
Windows fogging
heat not working very well
If the heater core hoses are bad you can find them inside the engine compartment on the firewall to the very left. There should be 2 black hoses that enter the firewall and connect to radiator.
