The ships anchor out (not far though) and the passengers are tendered in, Hoonah is a nice little town, our friend that went with us was disappointed that there wasn't any gift shops in town, the old cannery has all the shops. Yes we brought home some canned salmon, 4 of our group rode the worlds longest zip line while we were there. This isn't us but it is the zip line and you can see where the ship anchors. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eJ469JDH0A4 you have to go through town to get to the zip line.

You aren't that far from Harpers Ferry WV, swing on by and see where John Brown made his last stand.

We took that same cruise-tour in September 2004 on Royal Caribbean's Vision of the Seas, or something like that.
Downtown Ketchikan has two large stores owned by locals that carry native made goods...Alaskan natives, that is.
When you went to Anchorage, did the bus you rode from Seward stop at that large outdoor 'swap meet' across from the Hilton?
All that stuff is made in Alaska.
IMO, the best place to buy native goods is in the pawn shops, this is also the case in AZ and NM.
