Squeel Under The Hood

I Have A 1997 Ford F-150 4.2 V6 Truck. I Have A Squeel Under The Hood After The Truck Is Warmed Up At Least 15-20 Minutes. It Is Quiet Til Its Warmed Up Then When I Stop At A Redlight Or Stop Sign Or Let Off The Gas, It Starts Squeeling Pretty Loud. Seems That When I Apply Gas It Quits But When I Stop Again It Squeels Again. Once I Park The Truck And Turn It Off, You Can Still Hear The Squeek "Winding" Down Then It Shuts Off. Again It Only Starts Once The Truck Is Warmed Up And Its Rather Annoying More Than Anything. Any Ideas???

i would open the hood and look around real close. does it sound like a solenoid vibrating or ? Best guess i would have is the fan belt, alternator or idler pulley bearing. Alternator normally makes noise when cold, and goes away when hot so lets cross that off. To check the fan belt, take a cup of water and dribble slowly onto the belt while running. If the noise changes, you found it. Might need a new belt and clean crud off pulley groves. If not that, listen to the idler pulley bearing and try to wiggle the pulley. But normally the pulley wil not get better when you rev the motor.

it still makes the noise after the motor quits running. its kinda weird to explain but it is a squeel but because it still does it after the motor is shut off, i can't see any of them being the reason. there was a new belt put on but it still does it. its hard to find the problem without hearing it because it is an annoying squeel but a friend of mine looked/listened to it and he says it wasn't any of the things you mentioned because he checked all that. it has me stumped and i'm annoyed.

Interesting. Just for fun, check your fuel pump. When you say squeel it could really be high pitched whine. It's the only thing I could think of that could be running after the engine shuts off. Unless it is the fan clutch and the fan turns after the engine shuts off for a few turns.

Is the truck running properly , Is it possible that this is a vacuum leak , When this squeel occurs try changing the position of the heat defrost selector controls and see if this has any affect on it.

I am thinking a leak in the radiator or somewhere in the coolant system. Could your squeal be more of a hiss?

My 2000 f150 5.4L has always had this hiss/squeel after I shut it off, like something blowing off pressure. I think it might be in the emission controls. Mine also has a squeel at start up and it goes away but I've figured out that it is the passenger side rear area intake manifold is leaking probably due to a broken or loose stud/nut.

its not a hiss, its definately a squeel. yes it does sound like something is blowing off pressure since it does it after i shut the engine off but just can't pinpoint it.

If it is not a vacuum canister or resevoir then it may be EGR related but I would think that should throw a code.

well now since i think about it, right away when i start my truck, my brakes are really grabby/touchy too. this could have something to do with vacum. i was told there is something near the master cylinder that could be leaking or blowing off pressure. does that help?

Vacuum leak in the brake booster maybe. Bellows looking thing right behind the master cylinder. You'll see a big vacuum hose going to it from the engine.

On the engine side of the power brake booster vac there is a part from the emissions system marked EVAP, there is a vacuum hose that runs from the underside front of the intake manifold to this EVAP, Check this, On my truck(97 F-150 4.2V6) this hose was dried out and very brittle and pourous, I did not get any codes from it but it was def leaking vacuum, The EVAP itself could also be malfunctioning and possibly causing this squeeling sound, I think it may have some type of diaphragm in it and this could possibly be leaking ., You can disconnect this hose and block it off (temporarilly) to see if this is the source of the sound, I believe this is part of the Evaporative emissions system and keeps a vacuum draw on the fuel tank to reduce vapor emissions.
