Seeking advice from the gurus!!

I am a new psd owner and love it!! 05 F-250 CAI (i did not install came on the truck. From what i hear the stock housing is the way to go.) Some one installed a 4 in mbrp cat back exhaust and removed the cat. Other than that it is stock tha i know of. I was all prepared to upgrade with banks or bd power but you guys have enlightened me to a whole new array of products!! And now i am just confused. I am using my truck for general around the town driving and occasionally pulling a 28 ft. enclosed trailer and race car. I was going to upgrade to a 5 in turbo back w/o kitty or muffler. What else should i do trying to keep reliability first and foremost. I want a 300,000 + mile truck not a hot rod that is in the shop.

Congratulation on being a new PSD owner. If you haven't towed with your truck yet you are in for a great surprise, these trucks are a beast. I remember the first tow I made after upgrading from a 1/2 ton V-8, I couldn't believe the performance. Unless your hauling a tremendous load up steep inclines you will have to look in the mirror to make sure the trailer is still hooked-up.

IMO if you want 300,000 miles on your truck then you should do reliability mods and not performance mods. The Tech Folder has a wealth of information on what should be done for improved reliability. Installation of coolant filter, using synthetic oil, and becoming very **** about all required maintenance should top your list.

Welcome, and congrats on your new truck!
A few quick points -
1. If you can get the stock intake back, put it back on. I'm assuming your truck is still in warranty - maybe not. If you have turbo problems, though, the dealer will point to the aftermarket CAI and send you packing.
2. Did you get an OASIS report of all work done under warranty for the truck?
3. The 4" cat-back exhaust is fine unless you want to soup it up. If you can re-acquire the cat, it may be useful depending on where you live if you need to pass emissions now or later.
Until I know whether this truck has had problems or not, the best longevity mods are, in my opinion:
a) EGR cooler blockoff or delete. There are several threads going on this topic at almost any given time. The EGR cooler is a known achilles heel of the 6.0.
b) Coolant filter. Many who have had EGR cooler and/or oil cooler failures noticed gunk clogging up the coolant lines through those parts. Could be casting sand from the factory, "stop-leak" additive from the factory, or some other additive that didn't jive with factory coolant. The coolant filter is cheap and easy to install.
c) Crank case vent re-route - keeps oil mist from the crank case out of the intake. This mist combined with soot from the EGR system paves your intake manifold with tar.
That's just a start. For maximum reliability, drop a few grand and install head studs, updated head gaskets, and EGR cooler delete!

I knew nothing about an oasis report until finding this wonderfull website. Wish i had known before buying. The truck has 51k on it so i have a few miles before warranty espires but not sure on time. I have been reading ALOT on the egr. From what pictures and reading i have done it does not look to be a simple task.

If your referring to EGR cleaning check out this website, it provides some good info on the topic. It also has alot of other good technical articles and is worth bookmarking IMO. The standard engine warranty is 5 years or 100K miles.

To be a happy 6.0 owner, there is one little secret. You'll be happy if your truck is happy.
The key is regular maintenance. None of the upgrades, mods mean squat, if you don't keep up on oil changes, regular maintenance, etc. Avoid quick lube places for sure, use synthetic oil, and I recommend you to do your maintenance yourself.
IMO the first and greatest upgrade is the coolant filter. Cheap, and does more good for your truck, than you would think of - do some research on it.
Clean your EGR valve regularly, or consider losing the whole EGR cooler - if you can.
Use fuel additive in every tank.
These few are already put you on a "safer" side, all other mods just addition, and also add to the longevity of your truck.

I have done a lot of reading on this site before becoming a member and this the most informative site i have found. The egr cooler is it a standard egr valve like is on a gas motor? i have taken those off and blocked them up for years. the word "cooler" is really throwin me off. Anyone know where i might be able to find the stock air box?

Read through this first

The exhaust up pipe, passenger side, feeds exhaust gas through this cooler where it is introduced back into the intake through the EGR valve.

Here is the latest thread pertaining to the EGR and Cooler delete for the do-it-yourself fix by 06silvercrew.
