Someone else has suggested the flexplate. I will have to look on it for a part # and count teeth. The size looks right, the starter bolted up to the tran and didn't notice any issues, but I think I remember ththe tooth count was close, but the Fe vs 385 series was 5-7 tooth difference.
I got all the parts from a friend that had moved, so he may have had some parts get mixed up.
When measuring the pilot bearing hole in the crank "think metric". :)
Most bearings are metric, inside and outside diameter and thickness.
Inch size bearings are the exception. No kidding. :)
The outside diameter of a 351w pilot bearing is 35mm and the outside
diameter of my FE's pilot bearing is 42mm both are made for the 17mm
input shaft on the T18 etc.
I would try another flexplate first, just 'cause it is quick and easy........some flexpaltes are flatter than others, and some have a slight bell built into them to hold the ring gear and T/C the right amount back from the engine.
The other possibilty is that your engine was originally from a boat or some industrial application. I am suspicious because you said your friend's 390 crank has a differant flywheel flange than yours does....and all of the cast cranks should have the same pattern. Even the forged FT cranks have the very same bolt pattern, but with a larger and deeper register for the pilot bushing.
Are you certain you have an FE torque convertor ? The C6 also came behind the 429 and 460, behind the M engines, and small V8s, and even behind the 300 six cylinder in some full size vans. There may be even more applications. Who knows how many differant T/Cs there are out there ?

Reason: grammer, fat fingers
I have 2 converters with the 1.848" hub/snout, and just bought a reman from Advance with a 1.375" hub/snout.
none of these has a ford Part # I can find. I found my receipt for the one I bought, I will drain it and return it.
Some photos I've seen online show FE flexplates with a recess for the circular clamp, mine doesn't have that. I will buy one to compare with what I have. If I don't get it solved soon I'll put in the 351W/AOD combo I have.
I bought a brand new flex plate, and it was identical to the one I have on the engine. Same # of teeth, same diameter, and no recess for the circular flange. I have been told by several people that the flange wasn't always used by Ford. don't know if that is true or not.
A friend stopped by with a 390 crank, and the back end of it is different than mine, it is shaped to better accomodate the C6 converter hub/snout.
Probably time to punt. I have a spare small block/transmission. I will probably use that unless a FE turns up cheap in the next few days.
After looking at the pics it looks like there is a bearing race still in that crank. Maybe sombody installed a bearing type pilot and pulled the center out of it while trying to remove it.
