I believe the tailgate has a different contour at the top, where it must mate with the cap door. For that reason, I don't think an earlier cap fits properly on an '08-09. The rest of the bed is okay.

I know we have a few guys in our forum (7.3) that has switched the tailgate of the '08 to the early truck. I havn't heard anything about the top of the tailgate.

I don't remember my '06 having this pregnant look at the top. That's what I'm thinking, but it might be only the optional step version that has that.
