WITASCA, I am wondering if we have a mis-communication. Is your F250 CC a 2008 or 2009 with a 6.4L Powerstroke Diesel? Cause the gasoline powered F250 does not have this "regen" mode.
I am sick and tired of re-gen...Yesterday I headed out to Palm Springs worked till 930pm..Started heading back home (100 miles) set cruise on 70mph..last part of my trip home is climbing the Cajon Pass..started up the pass running on lower part of 1/4 tank..then BANG..CLEANING PARTICULATE FILTER..then 10 min later..BANG 40 MILES TILL EMPTY..
witasca, your truck should have a "recall" that would re-program the ECM to give you a message. The original 2008's did not have a notification of when it would go into regeneration mode. Look for a TSB that explains the 'regen' and it says that the idle rpm will increase and several other items that will happen. Then later there was a recall that changed all that. The new programing does not allow for it to go into regen mode while it is parked and idleing. It will inform you if you need to drive the vehicle to get the system to complete it's service and so on. Check with your dealer's service dept. to see if all recalls have been updated.
witasca, you might want to read the 6.4 Tech Folder before you make a trip to the dealer. Lots of interesting stuff and you may have other issues that can be fixed/updated especially if you are still in warranty.
If mine keeps cleaning the exhaust filter at intervals of less than 200 miles, I'm getting rid of the truck! I have about 1800 miles on it, and about 1200 of those have been towing a 15k fifth-wheel. All fuel has been ULSD. You'd think the exhaust would be hot enough to keep itself clean, with that load. If I end up swapping trucks ($$$$), I won't be driving a Ford.... ever again.
The problem is, all diesels have this system in some manner. Every diesel has to have a DPF. This is more the fault of Congress than Ford. The Gov't mandated the system be put in service. The guys I know with a new DuraMax haven't been to happy either. I know the Over the Road Truckers are sure not happy with it. It is against Federal Law to remove a DPF and drive on a public road or highway.
the spartan tuners with the dpf delete all have an option to run it with the dpf. so pop it on change your setting to "with dpf" or w/e it says go get tested then go home and take it off. they have the option because of the dpf delete law. so go with the spartan, just try not to run that 210 hp tune from hell while towing and send your egts to the point that something melts.
So I had to drive 4300 more miles. 2100 empty 65mph 15.2 hand calc regen 2 times a tank. Last part 6k trailer 10.3 hand calc 55mph regen twice a tank. Just got in. When I wake up in a day or three I'm calling Spartan. 7500 miles in last few weeks made me realize how much I hate regens!!!! Always regens when I don't want it to. The other sad thing is it would have paid for itself already...

With that load, regens will happen very frequent. More engine load = more soot. The exhaust is hot enough to clean itself with that load, the regen cycle you experience is mild and extra fuel is not being used to heat the DPF, at least very little. If you have something that will display EGT readings you would see that on level ground maintaining 65 mph your EGT's would be around 1000. The DPF heats itself to 1200-1280 during a cleanout. During normal operation, your EGT of around 1000 will keep the DPF between 700-800 most of the time, especially now in the summer.
I would encourage you to get a V10 if you don't like the new diesel engine. Switching to another manufacturer will just get you a truck that does not tow as well.
If you want to drive a diesel engine truck in today's world, remember one thing, there is "X" anount of "particles" in a gallon of diesel fuel. It is going to be captured in the DPF regardless of your driving or the load you are carrying. The amount of fuel that goes through your engine is the determining factor of how much soot is in the DPF. So, if you have a DPF you will have to have a "regen" to get rid of the "particles". If you remove the DPF and get caught driving on the hiway, you could get a hefty fine. Anyway, we are screwed!
regens do suck though, but honestly running the spartan with the dpf delete won't get you pulled over unless you run the race tune, floor it, and shoot black smoke all over the place. if you run any of the street tunes nothing will attract unwanted attention to your truck. if you don't believe search around for people driving their vehicles without smog pumps or egr valves or even catalytic converters and ask them how many times the police have said something to them about it. most cops arent smart enough to even know what an egr valve is let alone a diesel particulate filter
My brother, my cousin, and myself were all Police Officers. Now, I know that you don't think we are very smart, and we might be really dumb. But I guaranntee that I won't be the one paying a fine. It is still "the law" even if you don't get caught.
