You start by draining the pan, which is the starting point for the flow. When you unhook the return line from the cooler, that is the end point. As you pump the new fluid out of the pan and through the trans (while cycling through gears), you're forcing the old out the return line into your catch pan. There's a little mixing, but you get a complete change that way. I can't think of another way to get it as much of the old out, other than a power flush, which pretty much everyone agrees is bad.
I have a used F 350 with 269,000 plus miles. I am doing an oil change today on it. Waht other fulids should I be looking to change out? I bought this truck to tow my 30' travel trailer in the Wy and Co state areas.
How would you do that on a 2002 or newer that doesn't have a drain plug in the torque converter?
IDK man! I'm just learning here. Thanks for all your help and support. I now know how to change it out. I would have done it all wrong without asking the questions.

Can you explain why a power flush is bad. I have never heard of that before. Just trying to learn something new.

Transmission oil.
Brake fluid, (master cylinder and bleed brake system).
at what stage of this process should you change out the filter?
I am thinking that you would drop the pan and drain what comes out, change the filter, put the pan back on and then start your 6 qts at a time refil process....

The filter has an o-ring on its neck where it goes into the oil pickup. They tend to not come out of the hole when taking the filter down. Be sure you get the old one out when changing the filter.
