I have a 2001 ranger with a 4.0. When I turn the air on the compression kicks on but then right back off. It will not come on again unless i restart the truck. System has enough freon. I check the fuses and relays. Could this be the compressor or what?
UPDATE: Checked the power going to compressor. When it turns on its at 13.22 but then something is killing the power. Any ideas?
Maybe the systems high or low pressure switches are acting out, or if it came about after a recharge, maybe you've overcharged the system & the high pressure switch is just doing it's job & protecting things.
EDIT: So how did the high & low pressure readings look????
Were is the pressure switch located, its not over charged i just went out to my truck yesterday and turned the air on and is wasnt blowing cold so then i noticed the compressor wasnt kicking on and i checked it has about 45 pounds.
Well hook up your CEL, if lit pull & post any codes stored, as they might offer up some good clues.
Not sure just how your 01 AC is plumbed, or if it's different, but look in the Tech Info thread, atop this forums thread listing page & scroll down to the "misc" section at the bottom of the page, on how to charge a 98 Ranger AC & determine if yours is the same layout, if so it'll show component locations, or just refer to your repair manual.
Your system is nearly empty and the cycling switch is cutting the compressor out. At rest, the low side pressure should be at least near the underhood temp of the vehicle ie; 90* under the hood= close to 90psi.
If you are using one of those darn cheap gauges from the parts store, stop now and throw it in the trash where it belongs. They are terribly inaccurate and don't really give any useful; info. Rent a real manifold gauge set and post the accurate system pressures.
The low pressure fitting pressure really doesnt mean much at this point. From the sound of it, it appears your a/c is overcharged. Either take it to a shop and have them check the high and low side pressure or buy some guages and do it yourself. The low side pressure seems ok however it can be decieving.
The pressure can be 35-45 anywhere from nearly empty or overly full. The high side pressure is the real determining factor. On a properly charged system the pressure will be between 200 and 250 psi. The nominal pressure is around 225 psi. Do not exceed 250psi as things start to break.
If the system is overcharged it will trip the high pressure safety shutoff switch. Once the system detects a fault it will not allow the compressor to cycle back on until the system is reset. ---the ignition is turned off and back on. It sounds just like what you are describing.
Ok found the problem its the computer so does anyone know a good place to get a computer for a 2001 ranger 4.0 4x4.i took it to a local shop and they did some test and said it was the computer.thanks kevin
