I'm a rookie and need some advice. I have an '84 F-150 with 302 and automatic transmission. It has been sitting for 4-5 years. It was running when parked. Any suggestions as to the first steps I should take to getting it back on the road?
Battery, fresh fuel, check all fluids, check all lights, check brakes. If you get it goin', make sure to look aver the entire truck and fix anything that makes it undriveable. Sorry if I insulted you with the simplicity of my answer.
Ok, checked fluids, charged battery, added fresh fuel. But now when I put the key in and try to start there's no power. Can't get head lights to work or anything. Any suggestions? If the altenator is bad could it cause this problem?
Could be the solenoid located on the fender. Follow the positive wire to the solenoid. Be careful if you tighten the connections they break very easily. Turn your lights on then giggle the wires, if you make a good connection the lights will come on and it should crank over. Worked on my truck......
I would go one step further than what beast said as far as the fluids and change at very least the engine oil as it has no doubt broken down in the time that it has been sitting and may not provide adequate protection at startup. Plus pouring in the fresh oil will provide some lubrication to components before the pump pushes it up there you could even go so far as to pour half of the motor oil in through the oil cap and the other into the opposite valve cover through the pcv valve opening. Also try going across the terminals on the solenoid with a screwdriver quickly to see if it tries to engage the starter. If that doesn't work try getting a breaker bar on the crank bolt and try to turn the engine a bit to make sure it is not seized from sitting.
