Hey guys, I usually hang out in the 67-72 forum, but im workin on my '84 f150 4x4.
The flexplate is bad, so im changing it out. i have everything ready to just about fall out of the truck except for one thing thats holding me up - the trans crossmember.
Now as ya'll know, the trans crossmember has one support strap thingy on each side. You cant take the crosmember out without getting these off.
how do you get them off? theres almost no room to get in there with a wrench and socket, and theres no other way to get around it.
this is the last thing i need to do to get this trans out and get this truck back on the road.
Been there, done that, what a PITA! I use a 1/2" impact with a 12" extention and a flex socket from underneath, and hold the bolt from the top with an open end wrench. Good luck......................

yeah what he saidI used a stuby wrench to get up on the pas side and you have to come in from outside of it have lots of bandaids cause ya going to need them
I've used a pry bar to lift the floor pan enough to get the box end on, kinda handy keeping it on the bolt head... But the flex or a u-joint knuckle are what I use.
Well, nay on the impact gun. I borrowed one from a friend, and my air compressor wont power it enough to get the nut off. I bent the drivers side gusset so that i can slide the crossmember on the drivers side. the passenger side is the only one that needs to come out now.
I guess its time for the breaker bar, pipe, and a helper. I have to say this is THE stupidest thing i have ever seen. I had the transmission moving freely in about an hour, and the only thing making removal a 2 day project is that damn ceossmember.
