I have a 1999 f150 with a 5.4L. Yesterday on the way home from work my battery light came on and my voltage dropped to 11.8V(My headunit has a digital voltmeter which is fairly accurate) every time I got above 2000rpm. When I would slow down to 1500rpm my voltage would go back up to 13.8 and the battery light would turn off. I've searched on here to confirm my suspicion of the alternator. While searching the forum I also found alot of complaints on reman alternators. Any recommendations on new Part Store alternators?
My friend who's a ford tech told me that aftermarket alternators will eventually kill sensors on my truck. Has anyone experienced that?
HI, I have a NEW not a reman. alternator for your application. With these there is no need to send back a core charge, saving you time and trips to the parts store with the reman they probably gave you.
Here's a link to them on our site if you would like to take a look at them.
It took me three tries to get a good rebuilt alternator, so I agree that a new one is probably money well spent. While I was troubleshooting my alternator, I discovered that the problem you describe is indicitive of the brushes going bad. Brushes are inexpensive and appear to be easy to replace. Might be worth a try.
I was going to suggest buying the rebuild kit for them or having someone rebuild yours for you at a local place. I've had mine built up to 180 or 190 amps. been 3 months and still no problems to this day.
Agree with the rebuild. I had the one on my wifes Escape rebuilt by a local electrical guy, it has been on for a year and works perfect. It was about half the cost of a reman from NAPA.
I pulled the voltage regulator and looked at the brushes. They were really worn. The interesting part is that it looks like one was installed at an angle from the factory. It sat across the grove on the shaft a weird wear pattern. I guess thats why the battery light has come on every time it hit 4500 rpm since it was new.
there are two different sized alternators. the stock ones are either rated at 95 amps or 130 amps. I think the 130 amps would have come on the vehicles with tow packages, 5.4, and 4wd where the 95 amp would be on the base models.
One thing with a 200 amp alternator like the one i have when slowing down to an idle, to make a turn for example, the lights do dim. but when my system is hitting the lights don't dim as i'm driving, just an added benefit of the extra amps.
Has anyone seen the alternators that come from the company that does ambulance conversions? Those alternators looked like a pretty good deal for a "new" item. I think they sold them on ebay.
Whatever you do...do NOT get one from Autozone......you will regret it..probably three or four times.....
I couldnt agree more... I have had alternators rebuilt localy with good luck, but I have also bought new... I get mine from N.A.P.A. with good luck also
