So, yesterday I installed my new Edel. Perf. 289 intake and performer 1406 carb. on my 302 (The carb I bought used) I try and start it and it poofs out of the top of the carb and it backfired once. last night sparks were coming out the top of the carb! It started for a couple seconds then died. I backed the adjusting screws on the front out 4 turns and tried cranking it, and my starter wouldnt stop cranking, i had to pull the batt. cable off. Any help would be appreciated! I plugged a few holes on the carb with bolts until I can go and get plugs and I didnt pull the distributor when I replaced the intake, so there is no change in timing.
thanks
You may need to replace your power valve. Edelbrocks don't like backfiring.
With a long screwdriver, give the starter solenoid a good rap or two. It could be sticking.
How were sparks coming out the top of the carb? I'll assume you meant "embers" but that usually means that something solid is burning...which is also not good. It sounds to me like your ignition timing is way too advanced.
It might have jumped timing that first time you tried to start it and it backfired.
Before you installed it, did you check it over to see how the rods & jets were configured? How are the float needles and seats? Sounds almost like it's either being flooded with fuel or it's running way too rich but I'm not ruling out a possible timing issue either... I've seen flames shooting out of carbs before - not good times
Edelbrocks don't have power valves, Holleys do. Try tapping on the back of the carb where the fuel goes in, and on the other side, the needles and seats might be sticking, I had this problem with my 78.
My mistake...I was thinking of the Holley I had on my '69...blew two power valves trying to get it tuned right...bought an Edelbrock to replace that one...I think a 1405.
That was about eight years ago. My CRS kicks in every now and then.
Re-read his very FIRST sentence. "So, yesterday I INSTALLED my edelbrock INTAKE and carb blah blah blah..."
You have to remove the distributor to remove and install an intake.
Josh
On a 302, you dont have to take the distributor out to remove and replace the intake. The intake pulls straight off. Im gonna plug all of the holes the RIGHT way on the intake and I might get a rebuild kit for the carb, idk. The jets shoot out ALOT of fuel! maybe im not used to a 4barrell carb but it seems like alot! And my aircleaner sits really low now with the new setup.

The jets should be shooting the same amount of fuel as a 2 barrel if your not flooring it and the secondaries aren't open. Is it shooting ALOT when its just attempting to idle?
#1 Your timing is jacked, that's why it is backfiring out the carb. Either that or you installed the plug wires wrong. Only way for the spark plugs to fire when an intake valve is still open.
#2 I have to wonder why you would buy a used carb and not look it over? You have to set the float heights (7/16") and make sure the step-up pistons are free and the springs aren't broken.
