Hey you all - -
I am looking for a fix for a shifter problem: Occasionally when shifting my 57 F-100, the column shifter is hanging up coming out of 1st gear & sometimes will not allow me to catch 2nd. I stop and start over in 1st gear and it will allow me to shift through 2nd & 3rd with no problem. This is just intermittant enough to mess with my mind & must be fixed. My question; where can I buy shift column lever bushing, spacer, whatevers? The 3-speed is a new rebuild, no problems there. . . except I wish it was an original overdrive unit, but that is another whole can of worms.
This sounds more like youshift rod is simply out of adjustment.
You can buy those partsd (I think) from Carpenter, LMC, C&G. But I'd try adjusting the shift rods first - and just a dash.
OBTW just FYI if youdecide to bebuild your column, Ross (Albuq F1) wrote an excellent paper on the shift rebuild. I have an Acrobat copy, but can't find a link at the moment....You may want to ask him for a copy:
Well Sir, thanks for the quick responce, I appreciate it.
I thought about adjustments & shift linage slop at the transmission outputs, checked, nope all nice and tight.
What you are describing is a pretty common problem on the '57-60 when stuff starts to wear.
If it is not an adjustment needed as Julie had sugguested, you can also try Johns F- Fun Hundreds. They should have what you are looking for.
Meanwhile, if you have to drive it before you can get to fixing it......
Try positive shifting.
Keep slight upward pressure on the lever until you reach neutral. drop straight down through neutral, and keep slight downward pressure on the lever while shifting away into 2nd, and also while pulling back into 3rd.
Going from 3rd to second, keep slight downward pressure on the lever as you move away to neutral. Lift straight up on the lever while keeping slight upward pressure on the lever as you pull back into first.
BTW, Julie is actually a m'aam.
Hope this helps.

Are you looking for a 3 speed with overdrive trans? I have one that is/was rebuilt that I have no use for, it's complete with the solenoids. Let me know if you're interested.

At the bottom of the steering column under the hood are the two manual control selector levers where the shift rods from the trans attach.
In each one of these levers is a bushing and insulator.
What happens: The bushings dry out and crack apart, when this occurs the shift lever binds up.
It's also possible the bushings have disintigrated and fallen out.
This is a very common problem on all 1957 and later Ford vehicles with a column shift aka 3 on the tree.
In the 1961/66 & 1967/72 forums, this question is asked at least twice a week.

Hi,
Actually I wasn't thinking about sloppiness as much as I was thinking they are out of position- pulling the shift levers too far in one direction and not enough in the other.
Always enjoy being thought of as one of the guys!.... But......

......As I get older, it's always nice that folks can still see the difference. Thanks Penn Dick.
one actually disintegrated on me and fell off in the middle of a drive. That caused the rod to just jump out. Scary as hell when you can't shift out of 1st
Yes, I would consider returning my 57 F-100 back to the original 3-speed overdrive transmission. How do I contact you for details on your overdrive unit?
