So, I'm not alone. Last 2 weeks she's been starting slow after sitting, with the sons baseball and getting stuff ready around the house for the wifes (40th) b-day party I just got a chance this past week to get the batteries tested. No good, down @ 450 cca, replaced both but the alt seems to be OK. Checked with a multimeter alt shows 14.1 @ idle, starts like a champ now, $200 later. Oh well, better than chasing down a draw somewhere, right? BTW the PO had Interstate workhorses but only 650 cca- not the right batts so at least now I got the right ones in her.
I am noticing that my batteries aren't getting up to where they should be after I start the truck and the glow plugs go offline. I'm suspecting the alternator here. What would be the sensors that I should have on my autoenginuity to be reading while I do a little trip to see if it truly is the alternator? I'm fairly sure it's not the batteries as they are only 2 months old, unless I was just unlucky enough to get a bad batch.
I haven't pulled codes yet, so maybe it does thru a certain code as well, but I was hoping there there were specific sensors that would let me know if I am having alternator problems.
Thanks.
I just had that problem with my truck. Would turn truck off and voltage would go to 12.40. I seperated them at the grounds and drivers battery started climbing and passenger battery started dropping. Bad 1 year old battery. Took it back to AZ and they confirmed bad battery. I told them that they should be replaced in pairs when 1 is sapping the other down and that I was going to the Sierras in a week where there was no cell phone coverage. The manager authorized both batteries be replaced even tho 1 checked good. Talk about customer satisfaction!
well Tex, put me on the same list of failed alternators.
the truck berly started this am. i get 12.5v while truck is running on the batteries, and they drop below 12v next morning . and lower than that when GP are on.....
so time for new alternator and maybe batteries..... i have to do it before Carlisle....
Pete, call me tomorrow, I'll dial you right in 631-471-5230
