So I hook up the camper to the Ranger and the brake lights, turn signal lights, and parking/running lights work fine when I left on vacation. 168 miles later I no longer have any brake lights even with the camper disconnected. I checked the simple things (fuses) and they all look good. The cab and rear brake lights no longer function. What else can I check with limited tools and no test meter at a campsite? Help!
Turn signals, emergency flashers, and running lights work fine.
Well with the signal & emergency flashers working, it says that the wiring to the tail lights is likely ok, so maybe suspect a power relay, or fuse controlling it.
So maybe begin with re-checking fuses which you say you've done & lamp power relays..
In cabin fuses. Like #35 a 15 amp which provides power to the under hood power distribution box #13 park lamp/trailer tow relay.
#13, 20 amp brake pedal position switch.
#9, 7.5 amp bake pedal position switch.
#7, 7.5 amp right stop/turn trailer tow connectior.
#3, 7.5 amp left stop/turn trailer tow connector
#26, 10 amp interior lamp relay, dome/map light, GEM, Electronic shift control module & relay, power window relay, battery saver, so it's a biggie & if you've lost those other functions, put it on your suspect list.
Double checked all of the fuses and all are good. I also pulled the brake position switch on the brake pedal and opened the switch. I appears to be ok but without a meter I can't confirm this. Looks like I drive it back home without brake lights.
Got it home (safely). Checked the Brake Position Switch with a meter and found it to be defective. Not sure why this truck has the switch with the 5 wire connector on it since all of the schematics I have only indicate a 2 wire switch.
Anyway I replaced the switch and all is well. I guess 10 years of braking finally did the switch in.
