My truck is just around 160,000 miles. I was wondering if there is anything I can do to help extend the life of the E4OD transmission, help to make it last much longer.
Flush your tranny, install a magnetic drain plug, and refill with a good synthetic fluid!
Just don't stand on it all the time and it should last forever!
Well the main reason im asking is because id like to build a stout off road truck out of my F-250. Decent lift, 1 ton axles, 35-38 inch tires, and a bunch of other stuff. But if the truck isnt going to last long enough to see the benefit of those mods, then im not going to waste my time, money, and effort. I figure the main roadblock would be the transmission.
Installing an auxillary oil cooler helps too. 2 of the biggest killers of transmissions are heat and shifting from reverse to forward or forward to reverse with coming to a complete stop with the use of the brake. This was a tip from the transmission repair shop, given too me years ago.
Your E4OD should already have the magnet in the pan, so you just need to add a drain. Like it was said already, you will need a BIG cooler, I've converted my A/C condenser for that purpose. A remote filter is also a great idea, you can buy a nice kit for like $40-50 from about any performance shop. Torque converter lockup clutch apply piston is apparently a weak point in the factory setup, so you may want to look into replacing your converter with something a bit more stout. A shift kit with the pump mods should be in order as well, they correct some factory drawbacks quite nicely.
There is no telling when a transmission will fail. It could be 50k or 500k miles. I have the origianl 4R70W (AOD) in my truck with 270k miles. I say build the truck like you want it and if the trans goes out just replace it. I will say that If I had your truck, I wouldn't do any of the 1 ton stuff to it. I would think that its pretty damn tuff as it is.
To prolong transmssion life just keep the filter and fluid clean. I service mine every year and just drop the pan and change the filter and replace the lost fluid. The first time I did it, I also drained the torque convertor. Whatever you do, DO NOT go to a quick lube type of place and get it flushed.
The trans cooler and shift kit are manditory for a long life, but so is appropriate gearing for the tire size, plan on installing 4.56-5.13 gears with those tires.
yeah i would not flush it completely, just change the oil and filter accordingly depending on the miles you rack up in it....a shift kit will help and a tranny oil cooler and temp gauge would be nice like stated before heat kills
In the event I build the truck up, im not going to skimp out on anything if possible. I beleive I have a D50TTB, so im going to keep that for the time being. Seeing as it can handle 35's no problem, or so ive heard. Truck has never been towed with, and never been plowed with. Im definitely going to install a shift kit, as well as a bigger trans cooler. Cause I beleive I already have one, its just very small.
Sounds like you have the tow pac , thats good , it has a cooler allready . Like above shift kit & temp gauge very important . its the only way to moniter your trans .. I have found the trucks will coolers from the factory last much longer than ones with out ... Lew
